They reported that a man from Hamadan called Bard came to Mu`awiya and heard `Amr slandering `Ali, peace be upon him. He said to him: O `Amr, our elders heard the Messenger of Allah, blessings and salutations of Allah on him, say: ‘Of whomsoever I am master (mawla), `Ali is his master. Is that true or false?

`Amr said: ‘True, and I will tell you more. I have not found any companion of the Messenger of Allah who has the virtues possessed by `Ali.’

The young man was startled. `Amr said: ‘He undermined them by his command concerning `Uthman.’ Bard said: ‘Did he give the command or kill?’ He said: ‘No, but he protected (him) and prevented (his killing).’

He said: ‘Then did the people pledge allegiance to him notwithstanding it?’ He said: ‘Yes.’

He said: ‘Then what caused you to withdraw from his allegiance?’ He said: ‘My suspicion of him concerning `Uthman.’

He said to him: ‘You too had suspected (him)?’

He said: ‘I spoke the truth in it. I left for Palestine.’

The young man returned to his people and said: ‘We have come from a people against whom we have taken evidence from their mouths. `Ali is on the truth, so follow him.’
