Ibn Kathir reported it on page 213, volume 5 of his “ History” as follows: al-Muttalib b. Ziyad quoted ‘Abd Allah b. Muhammad b. `Aqil as saying: We were in al-Jauhfa at the Pond of Khumm when the Messenger of Allah went out to us from a tent, took ‘Ali’s hand and said: ‘To whoever I am a master, ‘Ali is his master’. Our shaykh, al-Dhahabi, said: This is an agreeable (hasan) tradition. [Al-Amini commented: It does not concern us that Ibn Kathir dropped from the tradition the part about the group that were gathering at Jabir’s, him being implored by the Iraqi man, and also mentioning the tradition in a reduced form.]
