قال الشيخ نور الدين ابن الصباغ المالكي المكي: وروى الامام أحمد بن حنبل في مسنده عن البراء بن عازب أنه قال: كنا [مع النبي ‏صلى الله عليه وسلم] في سفر فنزلنا بغدير خم، فنودي فينا الصلاة جامعة، وكسح لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تحت شجرتين، ‏فصلى الظهر وأخذ بيد علي فقال: ألستم تعلمون أني أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم؟ قالوا: بلى، قال: ألستم تعلمون أني أولى بكل مؤمن ‏من نفسه؟ قالوا: بلى. فقال: اللهم من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه، اللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه. فلقيه عمر بن الخطاب بعد ذلك ‏فقال له: هنيئا لك يا ابن أبي طالب أصبحت وأمسيت‎ ‎مولى كل مؤمن ومؤمنة. وروى الحافظ أبوبكر أحمد بن الحسين البيهقي رحمه ‏الله تعالى أيضا هذا الحديث بلفظه مرفوعا إلى البراء ابن عازب.‏
