In the controversy between `Alي, peace be upon him, and one of the companions, surely the right was with `Alي, peace be upon him. This is the consensus of the Ummah. Do you not see that the scholars extract the rulings for oppressors (bughلt) only from the incidents of Jamal and @iffيn. The poets have frequently mentioned the day of Ghadيr Khumm, and \assلn b. Thلbit said:

“On the day of al-Ghadيr their Prophet calls to them at Khumm, so listen to the Messenger calling;

He said: Who is your master and your guardian? They said, without displaying blindness there:

Your God is our Master and you are our guardian, and none among us will be disobedient to you concerning the Wilلya.

He said to him: Rise, O `Alي, for I approve of you as Imلm and guide after me;

Of whomsoever I am master (mawlل), then this is his guardian;

Be to him followers of truth, adhering;

Thereupon he called out: O Allلh befriend his friend and to him who opposes `Alي, be at enmity.”

It is related that when the Prophet, blessings of Allلh on him and his family, heard him reciting these verses he said to him: “O \assلn, you will continue to be supported by the Holy Spirit as long as you help us or defend us with your tongue.”

Qays b. Sa`d b. `Ubلdah al-An#لrي said while reciting verses before `Alي, peace be upon him, in @iffيn:

“I said when the enemy wronged us: Sufficient for us is our Lord and the Best Guardian

`Alي is our Imلm and the Imلm of other than us, through him comes the revelation.

The day the Prophet said: Of whomsoever I am master, then this is his master, a majestic affair

And what the Prophet said to the Ummah is imposed on everything that was said and is said.

Al-Kumayt said:

"[…]

The day of the branches, the branches of Ghadيr Khumm, the mastership (wilلya) was explained to him if he should obey?

But the men agreed to pledge allegiance in it and I did not see a forbidding danger the like of it??

There is an unusual story in connection with these verses which was narrated to us by our Shaykh `Amr b. @لfي al-Maw#ilي, may Allلh the Exalted have mercy on him. He said that one of them recited these verses and passed the night reflecting (over them), and he saw `Alي, peace be upon him, in his dream.
