Sufyلn al-Thawrي reported from `Abd al-Ra<mلn b. al-Qلsim from `Umar b. `Abd al-Ghaffلr that when Abْ Hurayra came to Kْfa with Mu`لwiya he would sit at Bلb Kinda in the evenings and the people would sit with him. A young man came from Kْfa and sat with him and said: "O Abْ Hurayra, I adjure you by Allلh, did you hear the Messenger of Allلh, blessings and salutations of Allلh on him, addressing `Alي b. Abي ^لlib: O Allah befriend one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who is at enmity with him?"

He said: "Yes indeed."

He said: "Then I bear witness to Allلh that you have befriended his enemy and have been at enmity with his friend." Then he stood up and left.

Transmitters report that Abْ Hurayra would eat with children on the road and play with them. When he was governor of Medina he would give a sermon saying: ‘Praise be to Allلh who has established the religion and made Abْ Hurayra an Imلm.’ The people would laugh at that.

While he was governor of Medina he would walk in the market, and when he came up to a person walking in front of him he would stamp his feet on the ground and say: ‘Give way, give way, the governor (Amيr) has come’, meaning himself.

I say: Ibn Qutayba has mentioned all of this in Kitلb al-Ma`لrif in his biography on Abْ Hurayra, and his statement regarding him is a proof, as he does not make an accusation against him.
