39. Al-Shaykh Tلj al-Dيn Abْ ^لlib `Alي b. 'Anjab b. `Uthmلn b. `Ubaydallلh al-Khلzin informed me, he said: Imلm Burhلn al-Dيn Nل#ir b. Abي al-Makلrim al-Mu>arrazي informed us through license, he said: Imلm ‘Akh>ab al-Khawلrizm Abْ al-Mu’ayyad Muwaffaq b. A<mad al-Makkي al-Khawلrizmي informed us, he said: Sayyid al-<uffل~ reported to me in what he wrote to me from Hamdلn that al-Ra’يs Abْ al-Fat< `Abdْs b. `Abdallلh b. `Abdْs al-Hamdلnي] informed us in writing: `Abdallلh b. Is<لq al-Baghawي informed us: al-\asan b. `Alيl al-`Anzي [1] informed us: Mu<ammad b. `Abdallلh al-Dhلri` informed us: Qays b. \af# informed us, he said: `Alي b. al-\asan al-`Abdي narrated to me:
From Abي Hلrْn al-`Abdي from Abي Sa`يd al-Khudrي that the Messenger of Allلh, blessings of Allلh on him and his family, summoned the people to `Alي, peace be on him, in Ghadيr Khumm. He gave instructions about the thorns under the tree and they were swept up. That was a Thursday. He called `Alي and took him by his upper arms and raised them up until the people saw the whiteness of the armpits of the Messenger of Allلh. They did not disperse until this verse was revealed: ‘Today I have perfected for you your religion, and I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam for your religion’ (5:3).
The Messenger of Allلh, blessings of Allلh on him and his family, said: “Allلh is most Great at the perfection of religion and the completion of blessings, and the Lord’s acceptance of my mission and the Wilلya of `Alي after me.” Then he said: “Of whomsoever I am master (mawlل), `Alي is his master. O Allلh, befriend one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who is hostile to him; help the one who helps him and forsake the one who forsakes him.”
\assلn said: “Will you permit me, O Messenger of Allلh, to recite some verses on `Alي, peace be upon him, for you to hear.” He said: “Recite, with the blessing of Allلh.”
So \assلn rose and said: “O elders of Quraysh, listen to my profession of the testimony of the Messenger of Allلh, blessings of Allلh on him and his family, concerning the confirmed Wilلya:
On the day of al-Ghadيr their Prophet calls to them at Khumm, so listen to the Messenger calling;
He says: ‘Who is your master and your guardian’? They said, without displaying blindness there…"
[1] It is so in <adيth 5, section 14 of Manلqib al-Khawلrizmي, pg. 80. He is al-`Anzي al-Ba#rي, resident of Sلmarrل’, whose biography is mentioned in Kitلb al-Jar< wa’l Ta`dيl of Ibn Abي \لtim, vol. 1, part 1, pg. 32. A biography has also been written on him by al-Kha>يb in Ta'rيkh Baghdلd, vol. 7 pg. 398 who said: He was a man of letters and knowledge and was a truthful man. His father’s name was `Alي and his title (laqab) was `Alيl, and he gained ascendancy over him. He died in 290 A.H.
I say: The <adيth was also related - without the verses – by Ibn `Asلkir in No. 546 and in the biography of Amيr al-Mu’minيn after it in the Ta'rيkh Dimishq, vol. 2, pg. 47, first edition.
The hadith was also related by al-Khawلrizmي with the above chain of transmission in the “Fa_ل’il Amيr al-Mu'minيn, peace be upon him” in Section 4 of his Maqtal, vol. 1, pg. 47.
Then he said: And this <adيth was related without the verses from the Companions `Umar, `Alي, al-Barل’ b. `ءzib, Sa`d b. Abي Waqqل#, ^al<a b. `Ubaydallلh, al-\usayn b. `Alي, Ibn Mas`ْd, `Ammلr b. Yلsir, Abْ Dharr, Abْ Ayyْb, Ibn `Umar, `Umrلn b. \a#يn, Buraydah b. al-\u#ayb, Abْ Hurayrah, Jلbir b. `Abdallلh, Anas, \udhayfah b. Usayd al-Ghifلri, Zayd b. Arqam, `Abd al-Ra<mلn b. I say: The reports of most of those to whom al-Khawلrizmي has referred as having reported the <adيth of Ghadيr will be found under No. 500 and in the following biography of Amيr al-Mu’minيn, peace be upon him, in Ta'rيkh Dimishq, vol. 2, pg. 50-90.
