عن عبد الله بن عباس: قال: لما خرج النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى حجة الوداع، نزل بالجحفة، فأتاه جبرئيل عليه السلام فأمره أن ‏يقوم بعلي فقال صلى الله عليه وسلم: أيها الناس ألستم تزعمون أني أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم؟ قالوا: بلى يا رسول الله قال: من كنت ‏مولاه فعلي مولاه، أللهم وال من والاه وعاد من عاداه، وأحب من أحبه وأبغض من أبغضه، وانصر من نصره وأعز من أعزه، وأعن من ‏أعانه. قال ابن عباس: وجبت والله في أعناق القوم.‏
