Sufyán al-Thawrí reported from `Abd al-Ra<mán b. al-Qásim from `Umar b. `Abd al-Ghaffár that when Abú Hurayra came to Kúfa with Mu`áwiya he would sit at Báb Kinda in the evenings and the people would sit with him. A young man came from Kúfa and sat with him and said: "O Abú Hurayra, I adjure you by Alláh, did you hear the Messenger of Alláh, blessings and salutations of Alláh on him, addressing `Alí b. Abí ^álib: O Allah befriend one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who is at enmity with him?"

He said: "Yes indeed."

He said: "Then I bear witness to Alláh that you have befriended his enemy and have been at enmity with his friend." Then he stood up and left.

Transmitters report that Abú Hurayra would eat with children on the road and play with them. When he was governor of Medina he would give a sermon saying: ‘Praise be to Alláh who has established the religion and made Abú Hurayra an Imám.’ The people would laugh at that.

While he was governor of Medina he would walk in the market, and when he came up to a person walking in front of him he would stamp his feet on the ground and say: ‘Give way, give way, the governor (Amír) has come’, meaning himself.

I say: Ibn Qutayba has mentioned all of this in Kitáb al-Ma`árif in his biography on Abú Hurayra, and his statement regarding him is a proof, as he does not make an accusation against him.
