On page 213, volume 5 of “Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah”, al-Dhahabi quoted Ibn Jarir al-Tabari as saying: “Al-Muttalib b. Ziyad reported that ‘Abd Allah b. Muhammad b. `Aqil said that Jabir b. `Abd Allah was heard saying: We were in al-Juhfa at the Pond of Khumm when the Messenger of Allah went out to us from a tent, took ‘Ali’s hand and said: ‘To whoever I am a master, ‘Ali is his master’.” Our shaykh, al-Dhahabi, said: It is an agreeable (hasan) tradition; Ibn Lahi’a related a similar one from Jabir through Bakr b. Sawadah (and others) and Abu Salamah b. Abdul Rahman.
