روى إبن الاثير في اسد الغابة ج 1 ص 308 بالاسناد عن عبدالله بن العلا عن الزهري عن سعيد بن جناب عن أبي عنفوانة المازني عن ‏جندع قال: سمعت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: من كذب علي متعمدا فليتبوأ مقعده من النار. وسمعته وإلا صمتا يقول وقد انصرف ‏من حجة الوداع فلما نزل غدير خم قام في الناس خطيبا وأخذ بيد علي وقال : من كنت مولاه فهذا وليه ، أللهم وال من والاه، وعاد من ‏عاداه. وقال‎ ‎‏ عبدالله بن العلا: فقلت للزهري: لا تحدث بهذا بالشام وأنت تسمع ملء اذنيك سب علي فقال: والله إن‎ ‎عندي من فضايل ‏علي مالو تحدثت لقتلت. أخرجه الثلاثة.‏
