On page 212, volume 5 of his book “Al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah” Ibn Kathir, the Syrian, quoted Ibn Jarir al-Tabari’s book “al-Ghadir” who reported the following from Sa`d b. Abi Waqqas through Abu al-Zam’i - who is truthful, Abu al-Jawza' Ahmad b. `Uthman, Muhammad b. Khalid, `Uthmah, Musa b. Ya`qub, Muhajir b. Mismar and `A'ishah bt. Sa`d b. Abi Waqqas: I heard the Messenger of Allah [s] making this speech on the Day of al-Juhfa while holding ‘Ali’s hand: ‘O’ people, I am your leader (wali).’ They replied: ‘You are right!’ He lifted ‘Ali’s hand and said: ‘This is my successor and the (only) one who represents me; God loves the one who loves him.’ Our shaykh, al-Dhahabi, said: ‘This is an agreeable (hasan) but strange (gharib) tradition’.Ibn Jarir related this tradition also from Muhajir b. Mismar through Ya`qub b. Ja’far with the addition that the Prophet [s] stopped until those who were behind him were able to follow him and ordered that those who were ahead of him to be called back; he made the speech afterwards.
