(5647) Al-Walíd and Abú Bakr b. Quraysh informed me that Al-\asan b. Sufyán narrated to us that Mu<ammad b. `Abdah narrated to us that al-\asan b. al-\usayn[1] narrated to us that Rifá`ah b. Iyás al-¬abbí narrated to us from his father, from his grandfather who said:
We were with `Alí on the day of al-Jamal when he sent word to ^al<a b. `Ubaydalláh: Come and meet me!
^al<a came to him and he said: "I adjure you by Alláh, did you hear the Messenger of Alláh say: "Of whomsoever I am master, `Alí is his master. O Alláh, befriend the one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who is at enmity with him?"
He said: "Yes." He said: "Then why do you fight against me?"
He said: "I do not remember." He (the narrator) said: Then ^al<a departed.
