39. Al-Shaykh Taj al-Din Abu Talib `Ali b. 'Anjab b. `Uthman b. `Ubaydallah al-Khazin informed me, he said: Imam Burhan al-Din Nasir b. Abi al-Makarim al-Mutarrazi informed us through license, he said: Imam ‘Akhtab al-Khawarizm Abu al-Mu’ayyad Muwaffaq b. Ahmad al-Makki al-Khawarizmi informed us, he said: Sayyid al-huffaz reported to me in what he wrote to me from Hamdan that al-Ra’is Abu al-Fath `Abdus b. `Abdallah b. `Abdus al-Hamdani] informed us in writing: `Abdallah b. Ishaq al-Baghawi informed us: al-Hasan b. `Alil al-`Anzi [1] informed us: Muhammad b. `Abdallah al-Dhari` informed us: Qays b. Hafs informed us, he said: `Ali b. al-Hasan al-`Abdi narrated to me:
From Abi Harun al-`Abdi from Abi Sa`id al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allah, blessings of Allah on him and his family, summoned the people to `Ali, peace be on him, in Ghadir Khumm. He gave instructions about the thorns under the tree and they were swept up. That was a Thursday. He called `Ali and took him by his upper arms and raised them up until the people saw the whiteness of the armpits of the Messenger of Allah. They did not disperse until this verse was revealed: ‘Today I have perfected for you your religion, and I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam for your religion’ (5:3).
The Messenger of Allah, blessings of Allah on him and his family, said: “Allah is most Great at the perfection of religion and the completion of blessings, and the Lord’s acceptance of my mission and the Wilaya of `Ali after me.” Then he said: “Of whomsoever I am master (mawla), `Ali is his master. O Allah, befriend one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who is hostile to him; help the one who helps him and forsake the one who forsakes him.”
Hassan said: “Will you permit me, O Messenger of Allah, to recite some verses on `Ali, peace be upon him, for you to hear.” He said: “Recite, with the blessing of Allah.”

[1] It is so in hadith 5, section 14 of Manaqib al-Khawarizmi, pg. 80. He is al-`Anzi al-Basri, resident of Samarra’, whose biography is mentioned in Kitab al-Jarh wa’l Ta`dil of Ibn Abi Hatim, vol. 1, part 1, pg. 32. A biography has also been written on him by al-Khatib in Ta'rikh Baghdad, vol. 7 pg. 398 who said: He was a man of letters and knowledge and was a truthful man. His father’s name was `Ali and his title (laqab) was `Alil, and he gained ascendancy over him. He died in 290 A.H.
I say: The hadith was also related - without the verses – by Ibn `Asakir in No. 546 and in the biography of Amir al-Mu’minin after it in the Ta'rikh Dimishq, vol. 2, pg. 47, first edition.
The hadith was also related by al-Khawarizmi with the above chain of transmission in the “Fada’il Amir al-Mu'minin, peace be upon him” in Section 4 of his Maqtal, vol. 1, pg. 47.
Then he said: And this hadith was related without the verses from the Companions `Umar, `Ali, al-Bara’ b. `Azib, Sa`d b. Abi Waqqas, Talha b. `Ubaydallah, al-Husayn b. `Ali, Ibn Mas`ud, `Ammar b. Yasir, Abu Dharr, Abu Ayyub, Ibn `Umar, `Umran b. Hasin, Buraydah b. al-Husayb, Abu Hurayrah, Jabir b. `Abdallah, Anas, Hudhayfah b. Usayd al-Ghifari, Zayd b. Arqam, `Abd al-Rahman b. Ya`mar al-Du’ali, `Amr b. al-Hamaq, `Umar b. Sharjil, Najiya b. `Umar, Jabir b. Samurah, Malik b. al-Huwayrith, Abu Dhuwayb, the poet, and Abdallah b. Rabi`ah.
I say: The reports of most of those to whom al-Khawarizmi has referred as having reported the hadith of Ghadir will be found under No. 500 and in the following biography of Amir al-Mu’minin, peace be upon him, in Ta'rikh Dimishq, vol. 2, pg. 50-90.
