In his correspondence to me from Hamadan the master of collectors of Hadith Abu Mansur al-Daylami Shahrdar b. Shirwayh b. Shahrdar, wrote: Abu al-Fath `Abdus b. `Abd Allah b. `Abdus al-Hamadani wrote to me concerning a tradition he tracked back to Abu Sa`id al-Khudri through `Abd Allah b. Ishaq al-Baghawi, al-Hasan b. `Aqil al-Ghanawi, Muhammad b. `Abd al-Rahman al-Zarra`, Qays b. Hafs, `Ali b. al-Husayn al-`Abdi and Abu al-Hasan al-`Abdi, saying:
On the day the Prophet [s] called on people to gather by the Pond of Khumm - it was on Thursday - he ordered for the space under a tree to be cleared of thorns. He then invited people to follow 'Ali (s) and took his arm and lifted it high up so that people were able to see his armpits. They didn’t leave each other until the verse 'Today I perfected your religion' was sent down. The Messenger of Allah (s) said then: ‘ Glory be to Allah for the perfection of the religion, the completion of the favor, His satisfaction with my mission and for choosing 'Ali as my successor.’ He added: ‘ For whoever I am his master, 'Ali is his master. O' God, love those who love him, be hostile to those who are hostile to him and defend those who defend him.
Hassan b. Thabit asked for permission to compose a few verses of poetry. The Prophet [s] agreed saying: ‘Say with the blessings of Allah’. Hassan started:
O’ heads of Quraysh, hear the testimony of Allah and his Messenger [s]. He continued:
He calls them, on the day of Ghadir, their Prophet, In Khumm so hear and heed the Messenger's call,
He said: Who is your guide and leader? They said, and there was no apparent blindness (clearly):
"Your God, our guide, and you are our leader And you won't find from among us, in this, any disobedience,
He said to him: Stand up O' Ali, for I am pleased to announce you Imam and guide after me,
So whomever I was his leader, then this is his leader So be to him supporters in truth and followers,
There he prayed: Allah! Be a friend and guide to his follower And be, to the one who is Ali's enemy, an enemy.
