39. Al-Shaykh Táj al-Dín Abú ^álib `Alí b. 'Anjab b. `Uthmán b. `Ubaydalláh al-Kházin informed me, he said: Imám Burhán al-Dín Ná#ir b. Abí al-Makárim al-Mu>arrazí informed us through license, he said: Imám ‘Akh>ab al-Khawárizm Abú al-Mu’ayyad Muwaffaq b. A<mad al-Makkí al-Khawárizmí informed us, he said: Sayyid al-<uffá~ reported to me in what he wrote to me from Hamdán that al-Ra’ís Abú al-Fat< `Abdús b. `Abdalláh b. `Abdús al-Hamdání] informed us in writing: `Abdalláh b. Is<áq al-Baghawí informed us: al-\asan b. `Alíl al-`Anzí [1] informed us: Mu<ammad b. `Abdalláh al-Dhári` informed us: Qays b. \af# informed us, he said: `Alí b. al-\asan al-`Abdí narrated to me:
From Abí Hárún al-`Abdí from Abí Sa`íd al-Khudrí that the Messenger of Alláh, blessings of Alláh on him and his family, summoned the people to `Alí, peace be on him, in Ghadír Khumm. He gave instructions about the thorns under the tree and they were swept up. That was a Thursday. He called `Alí and took him by his upper arms and raised them up until the people saw the whiteness of the armpits of the Messenger of Alláh. They did not disperse until this verse was revealed: ‘Today I have perfected for you your religion, and I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam for your religion’ (5:3).
The Messenger of Alláh, blessings of Alláh on him and his family, said: “Alláh is most Great at the perfection of religion and the completion of blessings, and the Lord’s acceptance of my mission and the Wiláya of `Alí after me.” Then he said: “Of whomsoever I am master (mawlá), `Alí is his master. O Alláh, befriend one who befriends him and be at enmity with one who is hostile to him; help the one who helps him and forsake the one who forsakes him.”
\assán said: “Will you permit me, O Messenger of Alláh, to recite some verses on `Alí, peace be upon him, for you to hear.” He said: “Recite, with the blessing of Alláh.”
So \assán rose and said: “O elders of Quraysh, listen to my profession of the testimony of the Messenger of Alláh, blessings of Alláh on him and his family, concerning the confirmed Wiláya:
On the day of al-Ghadír their Prophet calls to them at Khumm, so listen to the Messenger calling;
He says: ‘Who is your master and your guardian’? They said, without displaying blindness there…"
[1] It is so in <adíth 5, section 14 of Manáqib al-Khawárizmí, pg. 80. He is al-`Anzí al-Ba#rí, resident of Sámarrá’, whose biography is mentioned in Kitáb al-Jar< wa’l Ta`díl of Ibn Abí \átim, vol. 1, part 1, pg. 32. A biography has also been written on him by al-Kha>íb in Ta'ríkh Baghdád, vol. 7 pg. 398 who said: He was a man of letters and knowledge and was a truthful man. His father’s name was `Alí and his title (laqab) was `Alíl, and he gained ascendancy over him. He died in 290 A.H.
I say: The <adíth was also related - without the verses – by Ibn `Asákir in No. 546 and in the biography of Amír al-Mu’minín after it in the Ta'ríkh Dimishq, vol. 2, pg. 47, first edition.
The hadith was also related by al-Khawárizmí with the above chain of transmission in the “Fa_á’il Amír al-Mu'minín, peace be upon him” in Section 4 of his Maqtal, vol. 1, pg. 47.
Then he said: And this <adíth was related without the verses from the Companions `Umar, `Alí, al-Bará’ b. `Ázib, Sa`d b. Abí Waqqá#, ^al<a b. `Ubaydalláh, al-\usayn b. `Alí, Ibn Mas`úd, `Ammár b. Yásir, Abú Dharr, Abú Ayyúb, Ibn `Umar, `Umrán b. \a#ín, Buraydah b. al-\u#ayb, Abú Hurayrah, Jábir b. `Abdalláh, Anas, \udhayfah b. Usayd al-Ghifári, Zayd b. Arqam, `Abd al-Ra<mán b. Ya`mar al-Du’alí, `Amr b. al-\amaq, `Umar b. Sharjíl, Nájiya b. `Umar, Jábir b. Samurah, Málik b. al-\uwayrith, Abú Dhuwayb, the poet, and Abdalláh b. Rabí`ah.
I say: The reports of most of those to whom al-Khawárizmí has referred as having reported the <adíth of Ghadír will be found under No. 500 and in the following biography of Amír al-Mu’minín, peace be upon him, in Ta'ríkh Dimishq, vol. 2, pg. 50-90.
