Abu Ja`far Muhammad b. Jarir al-Tabari said the following in the first part of his book “Ghadir Khumm”. My mentor Abu `Abd Allah al-Dhahabi said: “I found it in a written manuscript in which Ibn Jarir was quoted, in this form: Mahmud (this is how it was written, the correct form is Muhammad) Ibn `Awf al-Ta'i quoted Ibn Jarir, through `Ubayd Allah b. Musa, Isma`il b. Kashit (the correct form is Nashit), Jamil b. `Amarah (‘Amir, is how it is written in al-Bukhari's al-Ta'rikh), Salim b. `Abd Allah b. `Umar, as saying: I believe he said ‘from ‘Umar’; my book does not contain, I heard the Messenger of Allah saying to ‘Ali while holding his hand: To whoever I am his master, Ali is a master, O’ Allah befriend the one who befriends him and be at enmity with the one who is at enmity with him” .
