Ibn Miskawayh reported in "Nadيm al-Farيd" a letter that Ma’mْn, the caliph, had written to the Banي Hلshim and he mentioned from it his statement:
"No one from the Muhلjirيn supported the Messenger of Allلh, blessings and salutations of Allلh on him, like `Alي b. Abي ^لlib. He supported him and protected him with himself and slept in his bed. Then he continued after that to adhere to the frontiers, confronting brave warriors. He did not flinch from confronting an adversary (in battle) nor flee from an army. He was strong hearted, given authority over all, and none was given authority over him. He was the most severe of people in punishing the polytheists, the greatest of them in Jihلd for Allلh, the most knowledgeable of them in the religion of Allلh, the most devoted of them in reciting the Book of Allلh and the most conversant of them about the lawful and the forbidden things. He is the possessor of the mastership (wilلya) in the <adيth of Ghadيr Khumm, and the one who is referred to in the statement of the Messenger of Allلh, blessings and salutations of Allلh on him: ‘Your station in relation to me is that of Hلrْn’s in relation to Mْsل, except that there is no Prophet after me.’"
