Daraqutni (m3.4) is `Ali ibn `Umar ibn Ahmad ibn Mahdi, Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni, born in Dar al-Qutn, a neighborhood in Baghdad, in 306/919. He was a Shafi`i scholar who was among the Imams of his time in hadith, and the first to record the canonical readings of the Holy Koran (qira'at) in a work. He travelled to Egypt, where he helped Ibn Hanzaba compose his Musnad [Ascribed traditions] and then returned to Baghdad. He wrote a number of works on hadith, the most famous of which is his Sunan [Sunnas]. He died in Baghdad in 385/995 (al-A`lam (y136), 4.314).
