قال السيوطي: ابن مردويه الحافظ الكبير العلامة أبوبكر أحمد بن موسى ابن مردويه الاصبهاني، صاحب التفسير والتاريخ والمستخرج ‏على البخاري، سمع أبا سهل بن زياد القطان وخلقا. وكان قيما [فهما] بهذا الشأن، بصيرا بالرجال، طويل الباع، مليح التصانيف، ولد ‏سنة 323، ومات لست بقين من رمضان سنة 410.‏

ألحافظ أحمد بن موسى بن مردويه الاصبهاني أبوبكر المتوفى 416 ، ذكره الذهبي في تذكرته ج 3 ص 252 وقال : ألحافظ الثبت العلامة ، ‏كان قيما بمعرفة هذا الشأن بصيرا بالرجال طويل البلاع مليح التصانيف ‏
