Al-Dhahabi said: He was one of the leading scholars. He narrated good traditions. He was an imam, a jurist (faqih), and a traditionist with numerous traditions, though he was not equal to Hammad b. Zayd in skill. Al-Bukhari has cited his tradition and Muslim has followed al-Bukhari in narrating from him. Yahya b. Ma`in has considered him reliable.
