[Biographical Notes in 'Reliance of the Traveller', Noah (Nْ<) \ل Mيm Keller, USA: Sunna Books, 1991 CE, x85 (pp. 1038-9) ] `Ali Qari (w48.2) is `Ali ibn Sultan Muhammad, Nur al-Din al-Mulla al-Qari, born in Herat, Afghanistan. One of the foremost Hanafi scholars of his time, he lived in Mecca, and it is related that he used to earn his income by writing out one copy of the Holy Koran each year embellished with marginal notes containing commentary and canonical readings (qira'at), and selling it to live on the proceeds until the following year. He authored a number of works in Hanafi jurisprudence, fundamentals of Islamic faith, the sciences of hadith, Sufism, history. Arabic lexicology, and Koranic exegesis, though the most frequently used of his works may well be his litany al-Hizb al-a`zam [The supreme daily dhikr], in which he gathered hundreds of supplications from prophetic hadiths and divided them into seven parts, one to be read each day of the week-a litany that forms an integral part of Muhammad al-Juzuli's celebrated manual of dhikr, Dala'il al-khayrat [Guides to blessings]. [al-Ghadيr fي al-kitلb wa'l-sunnah wa'l-adab, al-Amيnي, `Abd al-\usayn A<mad al-Tabrيzي al-Najafي, Beirut: Mu'assasat al-A`lamي (11 vols), 1414 AH/1994 CE, vol. 1, p. 174 ] الملا علي بن سلطان محمد الهروي المعروف بالقاري الحنفي نزيل مكة المشرفة المتوفى 1014 ، صاحب تآليف كثيرة قيمة ترجمه المحبي في خلاصة الاثر ج 4 ص 185 وقال : أحد صدور العلم فرد عصره الباهر السمت في التحقيق وتنقيح العبارات ، وشهرته كافية عن الاطراء في وصفه ، ولد بهراة ورحل إلى مكة وأخذ بها عن الاستاذ أبي الحسن البكري ، ثم عد مشايخه فقال : واشتهر ذكره وطار صيته وألف التآليف الكثيرة اللطيفة المحتوية على الفوائد الجليلة منها : شرحه على " المشكاة " في مجلدات أسماه " المرقاة " وهو أكبرها وأجلها ، وشرح الشفاء ، وشرح الشمايل ، فعد تآليفه وأرخ وفاته وقال : ولما بلغ خبر وفاته علماء مصر صلوا عليه بجامع الازهر صلاة الغيبة في مجمع حافل يجمع أربعة آلاف نسمة فأكثر ، وترجمه الزركلي في أعلامه ج 2 ص 697 وعد تآليفه ، وذكر في معجم المطبوعات ج 1 ص 1792 عشرين من تآليفه المطبوعة.
