[Biographical Notes in 'Reliance of the Traveller', Noah (Nْ<) \ل Mيm Keller, USA: Sunna Books, 1991 CE, x159 (pg. 1054) ] Ibn Hajar Asqalani (w29.2(1)) is Ahmad ibn `Ali ibn Muhammad al-Kinani, Abu al-Fadl Shihab al-Din Ibn Hajar al-`Asqalani, born in Cairo in 773/ 1372. A Shafi`i Imam and hadith master (hafiz), he reached the level of Commander of the Faithful in Hadith, the only rank above that of hadith master (hafiz). He first learned literature and poetry, but then devoted his considerable talents to hadith, which he studied under the renowned African master al-Zayla`i and others in Cairo, Yemen, and the Hijaz. His works were popular in his own lifetime and were hand-copied by the greatest scholars of the era and given by kings to one another as gifts. Known as Sheikh al-Islam, scholars travelled to take knowledge from him, and he was appointed to the judiciary in Egypt several times. He authored a number of works on hadith, history, biography, Koranic exegesis, poetry, and Shafi`i jurisprudence, among the most famous of them his fourteen-volume Fath al-Bari bi sharh Sahih al-Bukhari [The victory of the Creator: a commentary on the "Sahih" of Bukhari] which few serious students of Islamic knowledge can do without. He died in Cairo in 852/1449 (al-A`lam (y136), 1.178; Sheikh Shu`ayb Arna'ut; Sheikh Hasan Saqqaf; and A). [al-Ghadيr fي al-kitلb wa'l-sunnah wa'l-adab, al-Amيnي, `Abd al-\usayn A<mad al-Tabrيzي al-Najafي, Beirut: Mu'assasat al-A`lamي (11 vols), 1414 AH/1994 CE, vol. 1, pp. 166-7 ] ألحافظ أحمد بن علي بن محمد أبوالفضل العسقلاني المصري الشافعي المعروف بابن حجر المولود 773 والمتوفى 852 ، صاحب الاصابة وتهذيب التهذيب ، بسط القول في ترجمته السخاوي في ضوءه اللامع ج 2 ص 36 - 40 وذكر مشايخه وتآليفه وأطراه وقال : إمام الائمة ، قد شهد له القدماء بالحفظ والثقة والامانة والمعرفة التامة و الذهن الوقاد والذكاء المفرط وسعة العلم في فنون شتى ، وشهد له شيخه العراقي بانه أعلم أصحابه بالحديث ، وقال : كل من التقي الفاسي والبرهان الحلبي : ما رأينا مثله ، وذكره عبدالحي في شذراته ج 7 ص 270 - 73 وقال : برع في الفقه والعربية وصار حافظ الاسلام . ثم أطنب في الثناء عليه وذكر تآليفه وأطراها.
