السيوطي: المحاملي القاضي الامام العلامه الحافظ، شيخ بغداد ومحدثها، أبو عبد الله الحسين بن إسماعيل . . صنف وجمع، روى عنه: ‏دعلج والدارقطني، وكان فاضلا دينا صدوقا، وولي قضاء الكوفة سنتين ثم استعفى، وكان يحضر بمجلسه عشرة آلاف رجل، مات في ‏ربيع الآخر سنة 330.‏

ألفقيه أبوعبدالله الحسين بن إسماعيل بن سعيد المحاملي الضبي المتوفى 330 عن 95 سنة ، قال السمعاني في أنسابه : كان فاضلا صادقا دينا ‏ثقة صدوقا ، وقال إبن كثير في تاريخه ج 3 ص 203 : كان صدوقا دينا فقيها محدثا ولي قضاء الكوفة ستين سنة واضيف إليه قضاء فارس ‏وأعمالها ، ثم استعفى من ذلك كله ولزم منزله واقتصر على إسماع الحديث وسماعه. ‏
