[Biographical Notes in 'Reliance of the Traveller', Noah (Nuh) Ha Mim Keller, USA: Sunna Books, 1991 CE, x150 (pg. 1052) ] Ibn `Abd al-Barr (w40.5) is Yusuf ibn `Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn `Abd al-Barr, born in Cordova (in present-day Spain) in 368/978. A major hadith master (hafiz), Maliki scholar, and author, he was nicknamed the Hadith Master of the West, and was known for his travels throughout Andalusia in pursuit of hadith. He was appointed to the judiciary more than once, and authored works in hadith, Sacred Law, biographies of famous Muslims, canonical Koranic readings (qira'at), geneology, and history. He died in Shatiba in 463/1071 (al-A'lam (y136), 8.240). [Mir'at al-jinan wa `ibrat al-Yaqzan, al-Yafi`i, `Abd Allah b. As`ad b. `Ali, Abu al-Sa`adat al-Shafi`i al-Yamani, Haydarabad: Matba`at Da'irat al-Ma`arif al-Nizamiyyah, 1338/1920, events of year 463 ] قال اليافعي: الحافظ أبوعمر ابن عبد البر القرطبي، أحد الاعلام وصاحب التصانيف، وعمره خمس وتسعون سنة وخمسة أيام، قيل: وليس لاهل المغرب أحفظ منه، مع الثقة والدين والنزاهة والتبحر في الفقه والعربية والاخبار . . وكان له بسطة كثيرة في علم النسب، مع ما تقدم من الفقه والاخبار والعربية. Ahmad b. `Uthman, Abu `Abd Allah, Haydarabad: Da'irat al-ma`arif al-nizamiyyah, 1333 AH, vol. 3, p. 324 ] ألحافظ أبوعمر يوسف بن عبدالله بن محمد بن عبدالبر النمري القرطبي المولود 368 والمتوفى 463 صاحب الاستيعاب ، قال الذهبي في تذكرته ج 3 ص 324 : الامام شيخ الاسلام حافظ المغرب أبوعمر ساد أهل الزمان في الحفظ والاتقان ، قال أبوالوليد الباجي : لم يكن بالاندلس مثل أبي عمر في الحديث ، دأب في طلب الحديث وافتن به وبرع براعة فاق بها من تقدمه من رجال الاندلس وكان مع تقدمه في علم الاثر وبصره بالفقه والمعاني له بسطة كبيرة في علم النسب والاخبار ، وكان دينا صيتا ثقة حجة صاحب سنة وأتباع ، وكان أولا ظاهريا أثريا ثم صار مالكيا مع ميل كثير إلى فقه الشافعي The Ahlul Bayt DILP team does not necessarily agree with all of the statements and opinions expressed by the authors of these texts regarding their subjects.
