[Biographical Notes in 'Reliance of the Traveller', Noah (Nuh) Ha Mim Keller, USA: Sunna Books, 1991 CE, x110 (pg. 1044) ] Daraqutni (m3.4) is `Ali ibn `Umar ibn Ahmad ibn Mahdi, Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni, born in Dar al-Qutn, a neighborhood in Baghdad, in 306/919. He was a Shafi`i scholar who was among the Imams of his time in hadith, and the first to record the canonical readings of the Holy Koran (qira'at) in a work. He travelled to Egypt, where he helped Ibn Hanzaba compose his Musnad [Ascribed traditions] and then returned to Baghdad. He wrote a number of works on hadith, the most famous of which is his Sunan [Sunnas]. He died in Baghdad in 385/995 (al-A`lam (y136), 4.314). [al-Ghadir fi al-kitab wa'l-sunnah wa'l-adab, al-Amini, `Abd al-Husayn Ahmad al-Tabrizi al-Najafi, Beirut: Mu'assasat al-A`lami (11 vols), 1414 AH/1994 CE, vol. 1, p. 464 ] ألحافظ علي بن عمر أبوالحسن البغدادي الشهير بدارقطني صاحب السنن المتوفى 385 ، ترجمه الخطيب البغدادي في تاريخه 12 ص 34 - 40 وقال : كان فريد عصره ، وقريع دهره ، ونسيج وحده ، وإمام وقته ، إنتهى اليه علم الاثر والمعرفة بعلل الحديث وأسماء الرجال وأحوال الرواة مع الصدق والامانة والفقه والعدالة وقبول الشهادة وصحة الاعتقاد وسلامة المذهب والاضطلاع بعلوم سوى علم الحديث وحكى عن أبي الطيب طاهر بن عبدالله الطبري انه قال : كان الدارقطني أميرالمؤمنين في الحديث ، وما رأيت حافظا ورد بغداد إلا مضى إليه وسلم له ، يعني : فسلم له التقدمة في الحفظ وعلو المنزلة في العلم . ثم بسط القول في ترجمته والثناء عليه. وترجمه إبن خلكان في تاريخه 1 ص 359 وأثنى عليه . والذهبي في تذكرته 3 ص 199 - 203 وقال : قال الحاكم : صار الدارقطني أوحد عصره في الحفظ والفهم والورع ، وإماما في القراء والنحويين ، وأقمت في سنة سبع وستين ببغداد أربعة أشهر وكثر إجتماعنا فصادفته فوق ما وصف لي ، وسألته عن العلل والشيوخ ، وله مصنفات يطول ذكرها فأشهد أنه لم يخلف على أديم الارض مثله . إلخ .
