كان فاضلا، عارفا برجالات واسط وحديثهم، وكان حريصا على سماع الحديث وطلبه، رأيت له ذيل التاريخ الواسط وطالعته، ‏وانتخب منه، سمع: أبا الحسن علي بن عبد الصمد الهاشمي، وأبا بكر أحمد بن محمد الخطيب، وأبا الحسن أحمد بن المظفر العطار ‏وغيرهم. روى عنه: ابنه بواسط، وأبوالقاسم علي بن طراد الوزير ببغداد. وغرق ببغداد في دجلة، في صفر سنة 483، وحمل ميتا إلى ‏واسط، ودفن بها.‏
