QUESTION:

Is  it is allowed for a woman to "tie her tubes", i.e. to have such surgery of
tuballigation -  through surgery the falopian tubes are tied as a form of
contraception. Could you please base your reply on the rulings of  Ayatullah
Nasir Makarim Shirazi  regarding this matter.

ANSWER:

Zubdatul Ahkam (Qum, 1414) of Ayatullah Nasir Makarim Shirazi does not cover
the discussion on contraceptives. However, in a personal correspondence
(dated May 15, 1993) the Ayatullah has stated that any method of
contraception which can be reversed, such that the chances of fertilization
and pregnancy are about 50%, is permissible.
