QUESTION:
 
Is Namaz-e-Ayaat obligatory for the present sighting of the Comet 
Hyakutake? Please reply according to the Risala of  Ayatullah Sistani.
 
 
ANSWER:
  
Namaz-e Ayaat becomes obligatory for:
 
          (a) solar and lunar eclipse
          (b) earth-quake
          (c) any natural occuring in the space or on the earth which normally
              creates fear in people.
 
The condition of fear does not apply to items (a) and (b).  See Minhajus
Salihiyn of Ayatullah Sistani, vol. 1, p. 239.

In the light of the condition of fear, I do think that namaz-e ayat would become
wajib for sighting of the Comet Hyakutake.
