QUESTION:
Is it required for a convert to Islam to take the shahada in the presence
of a Maulana? Also, does the person have to take an Islamic name upon
conversion to replace their 'Christian' name?
If these things are not required, are they common or advisable?
ANSWER:
There is no requirement as mentioned above in both instances. Accepting
Islam is between a person and his or her Lord only. Changing names is also
because of cultural and social implications.
It is advisable to change names and have witnesses when accepting Islam.
