This is a good question and one that doesn't have a clear answer.

One would assume that it would happen using modern weaponry (whatever that happens to be at the time), and there are some narrations suggesting the Dajjal might have some sort of modern machinery, and some of the signs of end times seem (God forbid) similar to the results of modern warfare. From this angle, the word "swords" in narrations could be taken as a figure of speech to represent weaponry.

However, it is also entirely possible that, at that time, something will have happened to make modern technology unworkable. (Some people have suggested a magnetic pole shift; one could also consider a massive solar flare, or really anything that would result in the destruction of the means of production or use of such items such as an environmental crisis.) This would also be concordant with the general description of chaos preceding the arrival of the Mahdi (A).

So, basically, there is no clear evidence either way; it is one of those things which we will have to wait and see. Of course the important thing is to be on the side of the Imam (A), regardless of what kind of technology is available.

The letter to Imam Al-Mahdi (AS) can be put in sea, river, well or any water. If you have no access to any water, then it can be buried.

There are many minor signs before the re appearance of Imam Al-Mahdi (AS) mentioned in many books, but no one can claim timing or expectations for any of the major signs because the major signs are definite signs before the Re appearance which is not known to any one except Allah (SWT).

This narration which you quoted (Hazrat Mahdi's father's name is Abdullah) is weak and not authentic even among Sunni scholars. The authentic Hadeeth stated : Al-Mahdi's name is like my name, and his Kunyah is like my Kuniyah). Liars added (His father's name is like my father's name.

Imam Al-Mahdi (AS) was born in Samarra in 266 Hijri. The birth of Imam Al-Mahdi (AS) has been mentioned by many Sunni leading scholars in their well known books.

There are many narrations in Sunni books about the Sun rising from the
west as a sign of the Day of Judgment as it is narrated in Sahih
Bukhari  (vol. 5 pg. 195 and also vol. 7 pg. 191)  and in Shahih
Muslim (vol. 1 pg. 95). The narrations says that after that incident,
the repentance will not be accepted.

In our Shia books of Hadeeth, we also have many narrations that the
rising of the Sun from the west will take place but not as s sign of
the Day of Judgment. In Kitab al-Irshad by Shaikh Mufeed (pg. 358)
narrated from Abi Hamzah al-Thimali saying : “I asked Abu Ja’far
al-Baqir (AS) : “Is the coming of Sufyani definite?” He (AS) said
“Yes. And the huge sound from the sky and the rising of the Sun from
the west and the dispute between Bani Al Abbas and the killing of
al-Nafs al-Zakiyah and the coming back of Imam al-Mahdi (ATFS) are all
definite”.”

When  Imam Al-Mahdi (peace be upon him) appears, he will be accompanied by a set of cosmic signs known to the whole world, including the rising of the sun from the west, and the huge sound from the sky. If will be appeared to the public and he will say: I am the Mahdi from the family of Muhammad (peace be upon them), because with the emergence of these two great signs, it is impossible for the impersonators to look like his personality.  Mam Al-Mahdi (AS) is supported by the divine support from Allah, and he will have the ability to practically eliminate his  opponents in the East and West.

It will be obvious when the Mahdi comes because he will be accompanied by cosmic signs that will make clear that it is him (for instance, a call from the heavens, the arrival of Jesus with him). His arrival will also be apparent for all people and not confined to one group or region. (You can read more about the signs on this website.)

This is apart from the signs that all the Imams bore, such as comprehensive knowledge, knowledge of all languages, knowledge of all aspects of the religion, the ability to perform karamat, etc. Failing one of these things (for instance, not being able to understand a certain language or answer a question accurately) means he is not the Mahdi.

Anyone who does not have these signs is not the Mahdi.

In my understanding of the texts, when the Mahdi arrives, the question will not be whether he is the Mahdi or is a fake. It will be obvious that he is someone different from everyone else with a global role. The question will be whether people choose to follow him or not, as some people will not like what he stands for.

Imam Al Mahdi (ATFS) will come to establish peace and justice all over
the world. He will not fight with people and will never endanger the
life of anyone except those who fight against him. Our responsibility
is to prepare ourselves to be strong practicing believers. Our real
strength depends on th degree of our Imaan (Faith).

The secret of the strength of Imam Ali (AS) is his greatest degree of
humbleness to Allah (SWT) which is next only to the greatness of the
Holy Prophet (SAWA). And when we are unable to know the greatness of
the Holy Prophet (SAWA) and Imam Ali (AS) because of our limited
abilities of understanding, there is no question for us to understand
the secret of his extra-ordinary strength and power but only to say
that it is linked with his great humbleness and faith in Allah SWT).

Meeting Imam Al-Mahdi (AS) is a gift from Allah (SWT) to His sincere servants. How to become from Allah's sincere servants? that is the main question.

Theses are some suggested practical steps:

1. Remembering Allah (SWT) always makes the real believer remember the
Imam of the time because of the fact that Imam of the time is the
Deputy of the Prophet (SAWA) who is the Deputy of Allah (SAWA). More
and more sincere remembrance of Allah makes the believer more near to
the Imam of the time, Al-Mahdi (AS).

2. Remembering the Imam means feeling his presence with us in this
world and how he feels happy when we do good and unhappy if we do bad,
God forbid. When we really feel that he is with us in this world and
he is informed and he responds to our deeds, we will always try to
obey Allah which means obey the Imam (AS), and avoid any act which can
displease him. When people are asleep, those believers who know that
Imam Al-Mahdi (AS) will be happy when they pray the Night Prayer, will
get up and perform the Night Prayer which is just one example of
feeling the presence of the Imam (AS) and making him happy by
worshipping Allah (SWT).

3. Continuous praying for the Imam in every Prayer and supplication
because no one among human beings on this world is more dear to us
that him, and praying for his re appearance means praying for the
solution of all the problems.

4. Paying Sadaqa and giving in charity on behalf of Imam Al-Mahdi (AS)
makes us more near to him, especially when we do it secretly just for
the sake of Allah (SWT) and not for any worldly aim.

5. Reciting Du'a Al-'Ahd and Ziyarat Aal Yaseen. Some very pious
persins who met the Imam (AS) narrated that he encouraged them to
perform Night Prayer every night and recite Ziyarat Aashura and
Ziyarat Al-Jami'ah every day.

6. Serving the religion of the Imam (AS) which is the Real Islam of
the Prophet Muhammad (SAWA) and spreading it among people and
defending it from the doubts of the enemies makes you a servant of
Imam Al-Mahdi (AS).

7. Serving people including the followers of Imam (AS) especially
those who are in need, makes the Imam (AS) happy with you. Helping the
believers and making them happy, makes Allah (SWT), the Prophet (SAWA)
and all Ahlul Bayt (AS) happy with you.

These are just few examples of the ways to gain more nearness from the
Imam of the Time (AS).

Many signs have been related signifying the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (A). Some of these signs are considered more fixed than others, and some of these narrations are considered more correct than others. In any case, the underlying theme is that the natural and political order of the world will be turned upside down, there will be chaos beforehand, and when he arises, it will be clear with no doubt. (Therefore, people who go on TV or online today and say they are the Mahdi are not really the Mahdi since they are not accompanied by signs.)

Some of the signs are:
* The rise of the Sufyani
* A solar eclipse the middle of the month of Ramadan and a lunar eclipse at the end of Ramadan
* Some of the land being swallowed up
* The sun rising from the west
* Black flags marching from Khurasan
* The killing of the "pure soul" and the killing of a Hashemite near the Ka'bah
* A star as bright as the moon
* A fire in the sky
* The Euphrates flooding into Kufa
* False prophets
* The revolt of the Yamani
* The people of Egypt will kill their ruler and destroy Syria, and three standards will fight over it.
* Locuts at the usual and not usual times destroying the food
* Two groups of foreigners will dispute and much blood will be shed
* A cry from the sky that all will hear
* A face in the sun.

There are a number of books on Imam Mahdi (A) including on this website and you can read more signs there.
