Simple Resolutions For The Holy Month Of Ramadhan Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi Originally Published by: Al-Furqan, Vol.2.2, No. 17. 9 Ramadhan 1428/ 22 September 2007 Simple Resolutions For The Holy Month Of Ramadhan (Based on “Islam in Focus” TV program of Ramadhan 1420) ***** As Muslims living in the Western part of the world, we follow two calendars: Hijri calendar for our religious activities, and the common calendar for business and vacation. But we do not always fix the first month of the year (January or Muharram) as the beginning of all our activities. We divide our lives in different ways : For example , our academic year starts with September and ends in June. Similarly, in the Islamic calendar, our spiritual year starts with the month of Rajab and reached to its peak during the month of Ramadhan. Ramadhan is the month of fasting; and so our emotions are calm, hearts are open, and there is a kind of tranquility in minds, And, therefore, this is the appropriate time

  • Humans In The Era Of Awaiting

Humans In The Era Of Awaiting Sayyid Ali Imran Originally published by IqraOnline ***** What is the nature of humans in the era of awaiting (intiẓar), or what ought to be their nature? If we were to describe a human, a believer in particular, who lives in the era of awaiting, what qualities or characteristics would they have? For example, some may say a human living in the era of awaiting is very reactive, others may say they are very proactive, others may say they are radical, or confused, or chaotic etc. Alternatively, we have narrations that speak about the qualities of humans in this era. They describe all sorts of qualities and those qualities are not generally in contradiction with one another. In reality, humans in the era of awaiting and occultation are humans incapable of reaching spiritual and material perfection – this is in fact an Islamic worldview. ‘Allamah Tabataba’i says humans are essentially incomplete, they require a perfector (mukammil

  • Respectable Interaction Or Mixed Gathering

Respectable Interaction Or Mixed Gathering Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi Originally Published by: Al-Furqan, Vol.1 No.12. 24 Jumadi II 1427/20 July 2006. ***** This text is an expanded version of the paper written for the Zakireen Seminar held in London, UK in October 2005. It should be read as a follow-up to the previous issue of al-Furqan on “Gender apartheid...” While the previous article was written for a general audience, this addresses the Shi‘a audience in particular. Introduction The topic of “mixed gathering” has been a very controversial issue amongst the South Asian Shi‘as. Almost all Shi‘a organizations and centres in the West, at one time or another, have gone through debates and discussions on “mixed gatherings”. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss the issue and identify points of permissibility or otherwise in mixed gatherings. What is a “mixed gathering”? What is the norm in Islam as far as
  • Gender Apartheid Or Respectable Interaction?

Gender Apartheid Or Respectable Interaction? By Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi Originally Published by: Al-Furqan, Vol.1 No.11. 10 Jumadi II 1427/6 July 2006 The below article was published on 1st July 2006 in The Arab American News (vol. 22, issue no. 1064) of Dearborn, Michigan, USA. It was written as a response to the issue raised by Asra Nomani (also published in the same newspaper) against the separation of men and women in mosques. This article does not deal with the various side issues that some people bring up as so-called consequences of separation. I have dealt with those side issues in various majalis in Toronto, especially on the issue of marriage. Moreover, this was written from a broader Muslim perspective since the newspaper caters to Muslim as well as non-Muslim readers. ***** Asra Nomani suggests that the separation between men and women in mosques was established much later in Muslim history than during the days of the Prophet. She has also tried to link that with the
  • A Brief Discussion On The Arsh – The Throne Of Allah

A Brief Discussion On The Arsh – The Throne Of Allah Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba'i ***** There are various opinions about Arsh and the words: اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ “He rose above the Throne” (7:54). Some commentators opine that these words are among the symbolisms used in the Qur’an and we should refrain from debating about them. These are the commentators who are against crossing limits in discussion on the manifest book and Sunnah and consider it a Bida’h. But the Qur’an and Sunnah enjoin people to ponder about them, to research upon their meanings and to understand them better. How can they ban such debates, and researches on such verses and proofs that are evident to the learned. We too will for the moment from discussing it. Others however, have debated over the meaning of Arsh. They say: Arsh
  • Islamic Views On Organ Donation & Transplantation

Islamic Views On Organ Donation & Transplantation By Sayyid Muhammad Rizvi Originally Published in: al-Furqan Electronic Newsletter Vol. 1 No. 10, 26 Jumadi I 1427/22 June 2006. Introduction One of the new problems faced by the Shi‘a mujtahideen (the jurists) is the issue of organ donation and transplantation. The human body, in life as well as in death, is governed by Divine laws in Islam. There are certain limitations on what we can and can’t do with our bodies. The primary ruling of Islam about a Muslim’s corpse is that it should be disposed of in a dignified way through a special procedure of washing, shrouding and burial. Relying on guiding principles extracted from the Qur’an and the sunnah of the Prophet and his Ahlul Bayt, the jurists formulate the rules governing the newly occurring circumstances. What you see below is a series of questions and answers that I had written and published in July 1993. It is being presented here with additions

  • Angelic Inspiration And Satanic Whispering: The Speech Of Allah

Angelic Inspiration And Satanic Whispering: The Speech Of Allah Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba'i Al-Mizan, Vol. 5, Under Commentary of Surah ‘Aali-’Imran: Verses 35 – 41 ********* We have repeatedly mentioned that when a word is made for a meaning, it actually looks at the main purpose behind that meaning. The words, “talk” and “speech”, refer to voice, because voice conveys the idea of the speaker to the hearer. Therefore, whatever conveys that idea may be called a talk or speech. It may be a voice or a combination of several voices; in fact, it may not have any sound at all, as for example, is the case with sign language and symbols. If a siren conveys a complete idea, it may be called a speech, even though it is not uttered by mouth. Likewise, people use the word, “speech”, for signs and symbols although no sound is involved in them. It is for this reason that the Qur’an uses the words, “speech” and
  • An Essay On Kingdom And Its Place In Society

An Essay On Kingdom And Its Place In Society Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba'i Al-Mizan, Vol. 5, Under Commentary of Surah ‘Aali-’Imran: Verses 26 – 27 ********* An Essay On Kingdom And Its Place In Society It has already been explained that possession and property are among those conventional but essential concepts which man cannot do without - it makes no difference whether he lives alone or in a society. Possession basically is a recognized relationship between the owner and the property. Likewise, kingdom is a conventional, nevertheless essential, concept; a subjective institution which man cannot do without. But it is as a member of society, not as an individual, that man needs this institution. No sooner do the people establish a society than they start disputing with one another; everyone wants what is in the other’s hands even if it means trespassing the limits and crushing other’s rights under his heels. This tendency leads to chaos and
  • Sustenance In The Qur’an

Sustenance In The Qur’an Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba'i Al-Mizan, Vol. 5, Under Commentary of Surah ‘Aali-’Imran: Verses 26 – 27 ********* ar-Rizq ( اَلرَّزْقُ ), usually translated as sustenance, maintenance, or means of livelihood, is a well-known concept. A glance at its various usages shows that the word has a connotation of bestowal by someone to someone else, for example, the sustenance given by the king to the soldiers. Originally, it was used for only the foodstuff. For example, Allah says: “And their maintenance and their clothing must be borne by the father according to usage” (2:233). Mark that the clothing has not been counted as a part of the maintenance. Thereafter, the meaning was extended to include every foodstuff, even if the giver was not known - in any case, it was a bestowal of good luck. The process of generalization continued, and now it is used for every

  • Chastisement As Explained By The Qur’an

Chastisement As Explained By The Qur’an Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Tabataba'i Al-Mizan, Vol. 5, Under Commentary of Surah ‘Aali-’Imran: Verses 1 – 6 ********* In the eyes of the Qur’an, a man who forgets his Lord lives a straitened life - even though in our eyes he may be living most luxuriously. Allah says: “And whoever turns away from My remembrance, his shall surely be a straitened life...” (20:124). And it counts even the wealth and the children as chastisements, even though we count them as pleasant blessings: “And let not their properties and their children excite your admiration; Allah only wishes to chastise them with these in this world and (that) their souls may depart while they are unbelievers” (9:85). It was described, in short, under the verse: “And We said: ‘O Adam! dwell you and your wife in the garden’...” (2:35) that: First: Man’s joy and sorrow, pleasure and displeasure, attraction
