Acknowledging Difficult Times
Salamun alaykum, wa Rahmat Ullah. Islam teaches us to be patient when things are difficult. But some people think that means to act as if there is nothing wrong to begin with. And that is not how the Ahl al-Bayt used to do this.
One day, the first Imam, he fell ill. And a group of people came to visit him. They asked him, how are you doing this morning? And they were expecting him to respond with the same typical, I'm doing well this morning. But when the Imam responded, he responded with: "aspa-htu bi sharrin", he said, I'm not doing well this morning. And they were very shocked and surprised.
And so the Imam continued to explain. He said: "listen, sometimes God will test you with good times. Sometimes He will test you with difficulty. Right now I'm sick. God is testing me with difficulty. There is no problem in acknowledging the difficulty that you are going through and being patient at the same time.
These two, they don't contradict each other. They go hand in hand with one another. Wa as-salamu alaykum, wa Rahmat Ullah.
Salamun alaykum, wa Rahmat ullah. De Islam leert ons om geduldig te zijn als dingen moeilijk zijn. Maar sommige mensen denken dat dit betekent dat we moeten doen alsof er niets aan de hand is. En dat is niet hoe de Ahl al-Bayt dit deden.
Op een dag werd de eerste Imam ziek. En een groep mensen kwam hem bezoeken. Ze vroegen hem, hoe gaat het vanmorgen met je? En ze verwachtten dat hij zou antwoorden met hetzelfde typische, het gaat goed met me vanmorgen. Maar toen de Imam antwoordde, antwoordde hij met: "aspa-htu bi sharrin", hij zei, het gaat niet goed met me vanmorgen. En ze waren erg geschokt en verbaasd.
En zo ging de Imam verder met uitleggen. Hij zei: "luister, soms zal God je testen met goede tijden. Soms zal Hij je testen met moeilijkheden. Op dit moment ben ik ziek. God test me met moeilijkheden. Het is geen probleem om de moeilijkheden die je doormaakt te erkennen en tegelijkertijd geduldig te zijn.
Deze twee spreken elkaar niet tegen. Ze gaan hand in hand met elkaar. Wa as-salamu alaykum, wa Rahmat Ullah.
