Overcoming Anxiety
Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim, as-salamu alaykum. In this short clip, we are going to be discussing how to overcome anxiety and what we can do about it and overcome it in a permanent way so that we do not return back to that state of anxiety, especially again when we are thinking about the girls and the women of this society, growing up in a very toxic environment. It may be toxic at school; it may be toxic among your friends. Obviously, it is toxic in the media in terms of the fact that there is so much psychological pressure on you as Muslim girls and Muslim women and so many misunderstandings about Islam. That is one cause of anxiety.
There are many causes of anxiety that we may suffer. One of the issues that we could say induces anxiety in a girl or a woman is family breakdown. We have a very high rate of divorce in the world today, as we know in our communities, there is a very high rate of divorce. And this is actually also in Muslim countries as well, a very high rate of divorce. And of course, coming out of that divorce are children. There are children within those families who are seeing the family split apart, so they are seeing that safe and secure unit that was around them breaking apart. They are sometimes the victims of a lot of chaos and conflict going on.
This is one of the main causes of anxiety in children, because this sense of security has broken down. And if you are a child and continuing into your teens and even into your 20s, if you are a member of a single parent family, as an example, and you are aware of how your mother is struggling to earn a living, you know, she is not well perhaps, she has got her own illnesses to overcome, or maybe even her own emotional psychological issues to overcome because of what she has been through, what the whole family has been through, then often as a young woman, you can start to feel that it has to come down to you to survive. There is a limit to how much your mother can support you.
If the father is not around, I would strongly encourage all families to keep the father in the picture in terms of supporting the children and being in touch with the children. This is obviously providing that this is a safe situation for all concerned. Nowadays, again, professionals are finding that it is actually better for the children for both the mother and father to be in touch with the children. With the breakdown of family and the loss of the role of the father, this obviously particularly started in Western culture way back in the 1970s.
So this is coming up for over 40 years ago where we suddenly see a very high rate of divorce and a lot of fatherless families; and this has actually created a lot of imbalance in our society, and a lot of anxiety among women about how they are going to survive.
The sheer number of expectations that are placed upon you as a woman may seem impossible to achieve. I mean, you are meant to achieve well academically, you are meant to excel in your career, you are meant to get married by the age of 25, if not younger, you are meant to excel as a wife, you are meant to excel as a daughter in law. You are meant to, perhaps, adjust to a new family when you get married and have your children and juggle that with your studies or with your career. And very often things do not work out.
So you may be coming from a family where there is not a lot of support or backup for you. And as a young woman, you are going to be anxious about who is going to support you, what your future is going to be, how you are going to survive, how you are going to fulfill these goals that seem like very normal goals that everyone should achieve. But sometimes this goal just seems impossible to reach, especially, again, if you have emotional issues to deal with or family issues to deal with as well.
So already by the time you hit 25, 26, and now we have girls who are young women who are getting married in their mid 20s, and a year later they are divorced. So on top of perhaps coming from a broken family, your own marriage has broken down, you have a small child to take care of. And, once again, there is that cycle of chaos and breakdown around you, and you start to go into coping mode and you do not know what your future is going to be.
Is anyone going to remarry you? How are you still going to maintain your goals? Because now that you have got to take care of your child, you cannot go back to college, you can only get part-time work, many, many things. And, perhaps, this is not being discussed enough, but this can lead to insomnia, this can lead to actually many health problems in women and, like I said, a lot of high levels of anxiety and worry and insecurity.
So it is very important in these circumstances that we are living in in today's modern world, with all of this breakdown going on, that we build up strength within ourselves through a strong intention that is connected to Allah, Subhana wa Ta'ala. One thing I can say for absolutely certain is that, and I have mentioned it before, is that my life has not turned out in a way that I ever imagined it could have turned out. My life has not ended up in a place that I ever could have imagined. There were many challenges to overcome in my own life, especially again with regard to family breakdown, career studying, this idea of having to survive by yourself in a world that actually does not particularly care about you at the end of the day.
You are supposed to perform, you are supposed to get results in a world that is going to chew you up and spit you out. This is the kind of world that we often feel we are living in. On top of that, you may have some goals that you want to attain. So it is very important within all this to maintain that inner connection to the heart, and the heart connects to Allah, Subhana wa Ta’ala. And you ask for that guidance and support from Allah, Subhana wa Ta’ala, to open up a path for you.
Again, I can safely say that when I came into Islam, I had no idea what was going to happen. I did not know what was going to happen in terms of work, I did not know what was going to happen in terms of how my life would unfold. I knew that I was going to have to talk to people about a lot of their misunderstandings about Islam.
But, safe to say, there was that inspiration coming from Allah, Subhana wa Ta’ala. And then discovering the path of the Ahl ul-Bayt alayhim as-salam. We have those examples of the Ahl ul-Bayt who cut through all of those issues to establish Islam.
The Holy Prophet peace be upon him and his family himself was living in a society where perhaps if someone had said to the elders of Quraysh, the wealthy elders of Quraysh, that a poor member from a branch of Quraysh is going to establish a whole new system, a whole new civilization that is going to change human history forever, it is going to establish a civilization, it is going to change the world, the Elders of Quraysh would have laughed at that. Who are you talking about? You are talking about this man from a poor family who is just a merchant, and they would have laughed. But look at what he achieved.
Likewise with all of the Ahl ul-Bayt alayhim al-salam. So, definitely, whatever happens, whatever is thrown at you, you turn back to Allah. You seek refuge in Allah, and you say to Allah, ‘okay, this has not worked out. Okay, this is not going how I want and how I plan.
But you will provide me with another possibility, Allah. You will provide me with another path, another way,’ because this is what Holy Qur'an says. You put your trust in Allah, Subhana wa Ta’ala, and He will open up ways that you never could have conceived of. And so you make your intention, and Allah, Subhana wa Ta’ala, will open up a way for you. InshAllah.
Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim, as-salamu alaykum.
Inschallah.
