Is Self-Talk OK?
Is it ok to speak to yourself? Is self talk acceptable? Because today sometimes we hear people saying, "when you see someone speaking to themselves, that's weird. That is not something that normal people do." Is it something that we should be doing or not?
Today, scientific studies, behavioural experts, have said: self talk and thoughts within ourselves are very normal behaviours that we exhibit on a daily basis. In fact, studies have said sixty thousand thoughts go through our minds every twenty-four hours. And I can guarantee there are many thoughts going through your mind as we speak now.
It is a reflection of the subconscious mind, what we are going through, yet self talk and thoughts can be of two types. They can either be positive, or they can be negative.
Unfortunately, negative self talk is so detrimental to you and I. It is like stabbing ourselves from the back. Negative self talk is some what is limiting, negative self talk brings us worry, anxiety, brings us down.
A positive subconscious mind is always looking towards that which brings them in a better state of being. By thinking and reflecting of that which is good and not limiting themselves to negativity. What do you mean? Many a times when we are presented with a task and say, "can I?" It's so easy, instead of saying, "can I?" I say "I can". Simple movement of the I, isn't it?
Today, it brings about scientific studies have said much health and well-being, enhanced performance, when my self talk and the thoughts within me are positive, I limit and I restrict any negativity within me. Why?
They say, imagine, if you're constantly using positive words in your life. For example, this is an opportunity, for example, this is a blessing. For example, this is a chance for me to become better. When you're hit with something that outwardly or seemingly is negative. They say this is a powerful tool to improve our status and our minds, number one.
Number two, they say, don't say "I can do it". Use your name. In addition to the sentence, instead of saying, "I can wake up for Fajr, I can not watch haram on YouTube" and say "Muhammad will wake up for Fajr, and Muhammad will not watch haram.
That is shown to be scientifically very powerful and useful as a tool for self talk. You come to Abu-Fadhl Abbas, and you recognize what did he say? He says to himself, and he has a conversation with the soul, which is indicative of positive activity and hope.
Yes, he says, "oh soul! Do not be afraid of these wretched individuals! Have glad tidings of the mercy and the blessings of Allah." He talks positively to his soul, despite losing both his arms, he is encouraging you and I to think with optimism, to think with hope, isn't it?
That is a wonderful way for you and I to learn from these mesmerizing lines of the brother of Sayyid Ash-Shuhada. Yes.
