Supporting Your Spouse In Goodness and Trials
One of the important conditions that we have in marriage, from the Islamic point of view. Islam emphasizes that when you marry someone, one of the things that you have to see whether they are 'kufuw' of one another or not. And 'kufuw' means you have to see whether they are compatible to one another or not. And one of the most important dimensions of that compatibility is the issue of Iman and Faith.
If you look around, there are issues when you have two people from two different backgrounds as far as faith or even Madhhab [school of thought] is concerned, they are issues. Initially things are very good, oh we love one another, we can handle whatever comes. But life is not like that way, especially when children come in, then there are disputes. Do you go to for Shabe Qadr here, or do you go for Tarawih over there? Many issues come up and this is where the issue of Iman comes in.
For us, one of the best example is the example of Fatimat uz-Zahra & 'Ali Ibn Abi Talib 'alayhi as-salat wa as-salam [Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa Aali Muhammad]. I think the true love and relationship is tested at the time of difficulties. When things are okay, everything is okay but that is not the actual time when you see the worth of a person.
You know, this is a very interesting story, you might have heard it before, about Bibi Fatimah az-Zahra once was not feeling well, and Amir al-Mu'minin asked her, what does your heart desire from the sweets of this dunya [world]? What do you want now? Tell me and I will go and get it. Remember, this is normal level of life. We are not talking about miracles here.
And this is where Sayyidah Fatimah says that my heart desires ar-rumman [pomegranate]. Qalbi ashtahi rummanan'- 'My heart desires a pomegranate'. When Amir al-Mu'minin heard that, he said, okay, I will try. First of all, he didn't have enough money at that time, so he had to go and first borrow. Then he goes to the bazaar [marketplace], finds the rumman and then he bought it.
While coming back to home he saw a poor person sitting by the side of the road who was saying that I am maridh [unwell] also, nobody is helping me. So Amir al-Mu'minin sat down with him and he said, what do you want? He [poor man] says many people have been passing by, for more than one day here. Nobody turned, or sat down with me to ask me how am I doing, and whether they can help me or not. You are the first one. He ['Ali] says, what do you want?
Interestingly, when Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala gives you a status, he will put you to even higher levels of test and trial. Why does it happen with him? We do not know. Because he is on that level. And he [poor man] says I have this desire, my wish is to get pomegranate.
He ['Ali] had only one and he thinks about it. I have a wife at home who wanted this and I have promised I will get it, she is not feeling well. This man on the street is asking for the same thing. Then he says, but I remembered this ayat of Qur'an: "wa amma as-sa'il fa la tanhar" (93:10). Allah says when a beggar comes to you, do not refuse in a rude manner.
So 'Ali I decided to sacrifice there, and gave that rumman to that poor old man who was not feeling well. He had it. Actually, he [Imam 'Ali] broke it for him and fed him and he felt very comfortable and kind of better at that time. And this is where Amir al-Mu'minin now has a bigger challenge, he goes home, kind of embarrassed. What does he say to his wife?
And this is the time of test and trial. This is where 'kufuw' comes in. Whether they are compatible to one another on the level of values and Iman or not. Sometimes you will have similar situations where your respect and love will be questioned. You have nothing in my [your] heart for me, you gave to somebody outsider.
But now look at the example that we have from Sayyidah Fatimah, salwatu Allahi 'alayha [Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa Aali Muhammad]. When she realized, she says 'amma innaka maghmumun'- 'O 'Ali you feel sad for what happened?' Fa wa 'izzati Illahi Ta'ala'. She says, I swear by the majesty of Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, ' innaka lamma at'amta dhalika al-shaykha rummana' -'when you fed that pomegranate to that old man, 'zala 'an qalbi ishtihah ar-rumman', the desire that I had in my heart for the pomegranate just went away.' [She] is not questioning him, not being upset with him, actually saying 'Ali, don't worry.
And this is where Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala and now we come to the miraculous part of the story. Somebody knocked at the door and 'Amir al-Mu'minin said who is it? And he says, this is Salman. 'Ali opened the door and Salman was there, holding a tray, which was covered. And 'Ali said, min man hadha ya Salman? Salman, this is from whom? He says: min Allahi ila ar-Rasul, wa min ar-Rasul, ilayka. This is a gift from Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala to the Prophet, and from Prophet it has come to you.
'Amir al-Mu'minin took the tray, picked up the cover and he counted nine pomegranates. He looks at Salman, he says, ya Salman, law kana hadha ilayha la kana 'ashran, li kawlihi Ta'ala man ja'a bi 'l-hasana fa huwa 'ashra amthaliya. Salman, if this is from Allah for me, there should have been ten pomegranates here, not nine. Because Allah promises in the Quran if you do one good deed, I'll reward you ten times. And this is where Salman took it out from his bag.
They were close to one another. Don't worry about it. And this is where Salman, salawat [Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa Aali Muhammad]. He [Salman] says: "Ya 'Ali, wa Allahi kanat 'ashran. Yes, they were ten. But I just wanted to test you. This is where, remember this promise of Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, and this is Surah Al-Anfal, Surah Al-An'am, Surah number six, ayat number 160. When it says: "Man ja'a bi 'l-hasana fa lahu 'ashra amthaliha" (6:160). If you do one good deed, Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, will reward you ten times.
Dimmelo e io andrò a prenderlo."
Perché è a quel livello.
Lui ['Ali] ne aveva uno solo e ci pensa.
'Ali disse: "Min man hadha ya Salman"? "Salman, chi ci manda questo?" Egli rispose: min Allahi ila ar-Rasul, wa min ar-Rasul, ilayka.
Guarda Salman e dice: "Salman, law kana hadha ilayha la kana 'ashran, li kawlihi Ta'ala man ja'a bi 'l-hasana fa huwa 'ashra amthaliya".
Erano vicini l'uno all'altro. Quando dice: "Man ja'a bi 'l-hasana fa lahu 'ashra amthaliha" (6:160). Se fai una sola buona azione, Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala ti ricompenserà dieci volte.
