Relying on Allah -Tawakkul - What does it mean?
We began to discuss the issue of Tawakkul last night, something which is very important in each and every one of our lives. Many times we face very difficult times. Times where we feel there is no way out of the situation that we're in. Sometimes we get stuck like that. And we talked about an example and there is plenty of them that people reach a certain stage in their life where they feel there is actually no way forward and they just want to end their lives. Sometimes things like that happen.
But also, I'd like to add tonight that sometimes we get stuck in situations and circumstances that hesitation is killing us, ok? Fear of what is going to be waiting us in the future doesn't allow us to move forward. We have checked everything out. We have looked at the circumstances. We have looked at the job, for example. We have looked at if it is a case of a brother or sister looking to get married. They look and they see the person, the family. Things look ok but the fear of what is going to happen in the future, how this is going to unfold, is one that doesn't allow the person to move forward.
I have had many instances of this personally and others, people talking to me about their circumstances. One of the keys that will allow us to move forward, allow us to have that confidence to move forward, is Tawakkul. We mentioned the Hadith yesterday, and maybe we can read a bit more of it in this session, but this is what we have with regards to Tawakkul. But why do we not get involved with Tawakkul? Why is it so difficult for us to have this Tawakkul?
Let me first reiterate maybe and explain the different words, what Tawakkul actually is. Tawakkul, very simply put out is that you leave everything to God to do, ok. You give it to Him, and He is supposed to be taking care of it. Like, for example, you have investment companies, mutual funds that people give their money to, and you allow them to invest. You're not getting involved with what they're going to be investing it in.
You give it to them, they take care of it. They may either have some profits for you after a while, or you may have some losses. People put their money in the 401K accounts and then sometimes it takes a dip. People lose some of their funds because of this, because of the way they deal with it. The way we give that over, hand that money, our funds, to them to take care of, that is the same idea as Tawakkul.
The difference is that in Tawakkul with Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, we're giving Him everything and saying 'We are relying on You to do this for us.' Not that I'm doing it, and I want you to help me. This is one idea that we have maybe. We're seeking help from Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, I feel like I'm doing it, ok I'm putting the thought in it, and Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala is just barely helping you know or somewhat helping. But the idea of Tawakkul is fully handing over everything to Him and saying 'You please do it.' That is what Tawakkul actually is.
Why do we, why do a lot of people not have that Tawakkul the way we're supposed to? What happens? Why don't we feel we want to hand everything over to Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala for Him to take care of? One reason is because we don't see Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala as part of this world. We don't see God involved in what I am doing, what other people are doing. We don't see that.
Honestly, most of us, most of the believers, most of the Muslims do not see God as part of their day to day lives. Waking up in the morning, having breakfast, going to school, going to work, coming back, relaxing, enjoying ourselves, being with family, being with friends, driving. We don't consider God as part of that. We kind of maybe on the side, try to remember Him, but He is not part of this which is taking place right now, ok. He is a separate entity. I'm living my life. Things are happening, and Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala isn't part of this.
This is why the verse of the Holy Quran says: "wa maa yu'minu aktharuhum bil-Lahi illa wa hum mushrikoon" (12:106). Most of the believers are mushrik, most of us are mushrik, ok. Most of us have shirk because we think that a lot of other things are involved with our lives. It is my mum, or my dad, or my spouse, or my child, or my co-worker, or my boss, or my teacher, my professor, whatever it may be, that are actually doing things for me. This is the way I see it. I see my car as taking me from one place to the other. I don't see God in any of this.
Whereas the reality of the matter is, brothers and sisters, Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala is actually the only Independent Being involved with any of this which is happening. He is the one that is actually in control. He makes things happen. And if he wants, nothing will happen. Not only if he wants, nothing will happen, if he doesn't want it, it will not happen. The verses of the Holy Qur'an are very clear on this.
If Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala does not will something, it will not happen, no matter what you do, ok? And sometimes we don't get this straight in our heads and we get really, really frustrated sometimes. I have personally dealt with this. Sometimes we want to do something and it is such a simple thing and no matter how much you try, it just doesn't happen. It is sometimes such a routine thing as well and just wondering why doesn't the damn thing work? Ok, at this point when I want it. If Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala doesn't want it, it is not going to work, ok?
Ieri sera abbiamo iniziato a parlare del Tawakkul, un tema molto importante per la vita di ognuno di noi. Molte volte affrontiamo momenti molto difficili. Momenti in cui ci sembra che non ci sia una via d'uscita dalla situazione in cui ci troviamo. A volte rimaniamo bloccati in questo modo. Abbiamo parlato di un esempio, e ce ne sono molti, di persone che raggiungono una certa fase della loro vita in cui sentono che non c'è alcuna via d'uscita e vogliono porre fine alla loro vita. A volte accadono cose del genere.
Stasera vorrei aggiungere che a volte rimaniamo bloccati in situazioni e circostanze in cui siamo sopraffatti dall'incertezza, ok? La paura di ciò che ci aspetta in futuro non ci permette di andare avanti. Abbiamo controllato tutto. Abbiamo esaminato le circostanze. Abbiamo esaminato il lavoro, per esempio. Abbiamo valutato ad esempio, nel caso di un fratello o di una sorella che vogliono sposarsi. Guardano e valutano la persona, la famiglia. Le cose sembrano a posto, ma la paura di ciò che accadrà in futuro, di come si evolverà la situazione, non permette alla persona di andare avanti.
Ho avuto molti casi del genere, a livello personale e anche altre persone, che mi hanno parlato delle loro circostanze. Una delle chiavi che ci permetterà di andare avanti, di avere la fiducia necessaria per farlo, è il Tawakkul. Abbiamo citato l'Hadith ieri, e forse potremo leggerne un po' di più in questa sessione, ma questo è ciò che abbiamo riguardo al Tawakkul. Ma perché non ci impegniamo nel Tawakkul? Perché è così difficile per noi avere Tawakkul?
Permettetemi innanzitutto di ribadire, magari spiegandolo con parole diverse, che cos'è effettivamente il Tawakkul. Tawakkul, in parole povere, consiste nel lasciare tutto a Dio. Si affida tutto a Lui e Lui se ne occupa. Ad esempio, ci sono società di investimento, fondi comuni in cui la gente mette il proprio denaro e a cui si permette di investire. Non ci si occupa di come il denaro sara' usato.
Voi glielo date, loro se ne occupano. Dopo un po' di tempo possono avere dei profitti per voi, oppure delle perdite. Le persone a volte investono 1000$ e a volte subiscono un calo. Le persone perdono parte dei loro fondi per questo motivo, per il modo in cui li gestiscono. Il modo in cui diamo il denaro, i nostri fondi, a loro perché se ne occupino, è la stessa idea di Tawakkul.
La differenza è che nel Tawakkul con Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, Gli stiamo dando tutto e diciamo: "Ci affidiamo a Te per fare questo per noi". Non che lo faccio io e voglio che tu mi aiuti. Questa è un'idea che forse abbiamo, cioe' cerchiamo l'aiuto di Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala, sento che lo sto facendo, mi sto impegnando, e Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala ci aiuta appena, in qualche modo. Ma l'idea di Tawakkul è di affidare tutto a Lui e di dire: "Ti prego, fallo tu". Questo è il vero significato di Tawakkul.
Perché molte persone non hanno Tawakkul come dovrebbero? Che cosa succede? Perché non sentiamo di voler consegnare tutto ad Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala perché se ne occupi Lui? Uno dei motivi è che non vediamo Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala come parte di questo mondo. Non vediamo Dio coinvolto in quello che faccio io, in quello che fanno gli altri. Non lo vediamo.
Onestamente, la maggior parte di noi, la maggior parte dei credenti, la maggior parte dei musulmani non vede Dio come parte della propria vita quotidiana. Svegliarsi al mattino, fare colazione, andare a scuola, andare al lavoro, tornare, rilassarsi, divertirsi, stare con la famiglia, stare con gli amici, guidare. Non consideriamo Dio come parte di tutto questo. Magari ci mettiamo in disparte, cerchiamo di ricordarci di Lui, ma Lui non fa parte di tutto ciò che sta accadendo in questo momento. È un'entità separata. Sto vivendo la mia vita. Le cose stanno accadendo e Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala non ne fa parte.
Ecco perché il verso del Sacro Corano dice: "Wa maa yu’minu aksaru hum billaahi illaa wa hum mushrikoon" (12:106). La maggior parte dei credenti è mushrik, la maggior parte di noi è mushrik, ok. La maggior parte di noi ha shirk perché pensa che molte altre cose siano coinvolte nella sua vita. È mia madre, o mio padre, o il mio coniuge, o mio figlio, o il mio collega, o il mio capo, o il mio insegnante, il mio professore, qualunque cosa sia, che stanno facendo le cose per me. Questo è il mio modo di vedere. Vedo la mia auto che mi porta da un posto all'altro. Non vedo Dio in tutto questo.
In realtà, fratelli e sorelle, Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala è l'unico Essere indipendente coinvolto in tutto ciò che sta accadendo. È Lui che ha il controllo. È Lui che fa accadere le cose. E se Lui vuole, non accadrà nulla. Non solo se vuole, non succederà nulla, ma se non vuole, non succederà. I versetti del Sacro Corano sono molto chiari al riguardo.
Se Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala non vuole qualcosa, non accadrà, qualunque cosa tu faccia. A volte non riusciamo a capirlo bene e ci sentiamo molto, molto frustrati. Ho avuto a che fare personalmente con questo problema. A volte vogliamo fare qualcosa di così semplice e, per quanto ci si sforzi, non succede. A volte si tratta anche di una cosa quotidiana e ci si chiede perché non funziona a questo punto quando lo voglio io? Se Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala non lo vuole, non funzionerà.
