Does The Holy Qur'an Approve The Cursing Found in Ziyarat Ashura?

Every statement in Ziyārat Ashura is warranted by the teachings of the Qur'an. All the meanings that you find, all the duāʾs that you find, every statement that you find in Ziyārat Ashura, you will find that the root of this statement is within the Qur'an. I feel personally, that this is the point that perhaps sticks out and causes a lot of people to question the authenticity of Ziyārat Ashura. And this is the issue of lāʿnah (cursing).

This is the fact that we are sending lāʿnah on Fulan and Fulan (this and that person) and “Allāhumma lāʿan awwal man ẓalama ḥaqq Muhammadin wa āl-i Muhammad wa ākhira tābiin lahu ala dhālika” (O Allah, curse the first of those who oppressed the rights of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and the last follower who aided him in that.) and send lāʿnah on al-Yazid, al-Mu‘awiya and al-Sufyān and al-Ziyād, [etc.]

They say that, the majority of the people, they say that we reject this is Ziyāra because of the lāʿnah. Yā akhī (my brother), lāʿnah is a concept which is deeply rooted within Islam and forms the core of the teachings within the Qur'an.

Lāʿnah is a culture and the concept which is deeply rooted within the Qur'an. Ikhwānī (my brothers and sisters), search the Qur'an. There are at least 37 verses in the Qur'an where Allah (SWT) sends lāʿnah on different people for different reasons. How can I have shock in Ziyārat Ashura for the lāʿnah, when I read the Qur'an and there is lāʿnah in the Qur'an. If I have shock in the authenticity of Ziyārat Ashura because of the lāʿnah, that means I should have shock in the Qur'an because of the lāʿnah within the Qur'an. Anyone has the majāl (room) to have shakk (doubt/uncertainty) within the Qur'an. You'll find verses within the Qur'an itself. We'll share with you two verses, just as, by the way, a quick reference.

In Sūrat al-Baqarah, Allah (SWT) says, verse 159 “Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm, Inna alladhīna yaktumūna mā anzalnā mina al‑bayyināti wa al‑hudā min baʿdi mā bayyannāhu lilnnāsi fī al‑kitābi [...]” (2:159). Allah (SWT) is warning a group of people: Indeed those who cover up, who try to hide the truth, after we have revealed it very clearly. Those who try to cover up guidance after we have revealed it very clearly. “[...] baʿdi mā bayyannāhu lilnnāsi fī al‑kitābi [...]” those people who try to conceal ḥaqq (the right/truth), those people who try to conceal the truth, which is within the Qur'an and very clearly manifested, then what is the rijz (punishment)? What happens to these people?

Allah (SWT) says “[...] ūlāʾika yalʿanuhumu Allāh [...]”. Those people who try to, intentionally, cover up ḥaqq, who intentionally cover up the truth, the lāʿnah of Allah is on them. But only the lāʿnah of Allah? No! “[...] wa yalʿanuhumu al‑lāʿinūn”. Everyone in this kawn (universe) who sends lāʿnah, will send lāʿnah on those people who try and hide the truth.

For those people who hide the truth, fa ʿalaykum bil-ḥaqq (you must uphold the truth) Mu‘awiya, did he not try to cover the ḥaqq in regards to the Wilāyat (the leadership) Amīr al-Mu’minīn? Mu‘awiya, did [he] not kill people who were narrating the Fadāʾil (virtues) Amīr al-Mu’minīn? Meaning what? The Wilāya of Amīr al-Mu’minīn is ḥaqq or not? Is ḥaqq, as per the Qur'an, as per Āyat al-Ghadīr, as we saw in the last few nights. Therefore the technique of this verse on Mu‘awiya is clearer than the day.

More to that, [in] Surah An-Nisā, Allah (SWT) says: “Bismillāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm, wa man yaqtul mu’minan muta‘ammidan fa jazā’uhu jahannamu khālidān fīhā, wa ghaḍiba Allāhu ʿalayhi wa laʿanahu, [...]” (4:93). Allah says, the person who kills another Muʾmin or a person who kills a Muʾmin on purpose: a person who kills a Muʾmin and that Muʾmin had no fault, then his reward is that he will be thrown into Jahannam. The anger of Allah will be upon him and Allah will send his lāʿnah on him.

Based on this verse of the Qur'an, [did] Yazid kill a Muʾmin or not? Mu’min shoo? (What do you mean if he was a Mu’min). Sayyidun, Sadat al-Mu’minīn (one of the masters of Mu’mineen), he killed. Yazin killed [him], Sadat al-Mu’minīn.

So based on the Qur'an, Yazid is mustaḥiq (deserving) of lāʿnah or not? Based on the Qur'an, al-Ziyād is mustaḥiq for lāʿnah or not? Based on the Qur'an, al-Marwān are mustaḥiq for lāʿnah or not? Based on the Qur'an, they deserve lāʿnah. So then why this shock in Ziyārat Ashura? In essence, to doubt the teachings within Ziyārat Ashura: to doubt Ziyārat Ashura is to doubt the Qur'an in itself. Because the teachings that are in Ziyārat Ashura, are reflected within the Qur'an.

Ṣalawātu Allāh ʿalā Muḥammad wa āli Muḥammad.
