Animals will be resurrected on the Day of Judgement and many animals will be Paradise like the Boraaq of the Prophet Mohammad (SAWA), the Camel-she of prophet Saleh (AS), the dog of the people of the Cave etc.

Dog . Body . Najis . Clothing

My friend has a big dog and she brings it when we hang out. Would my clothes or body become Najis if I pet or play with the dog although it isn't wet?

If you touch a Najis item e.g. a dog, with wetness, then your touching part of your body or cloth becomes Najis and needs to be washed with water to be Taahir. If you touch a dog or any Najis item with out wetness, then your body of cloth is not Najis.

For health precaution, you are advised not to touch a dog even with dry hands because of the possibility of transfer of microbes or parasites from the dog to your body. You would be allowed to have a shepherd dog or a guard dog, and it will be very useful to do so. Keep in mind that a dog is still externally najis, and you must still treat it as such. For example, if the dog is wet, and it touches you, or you touch it, or it licks you, or its hair gets onto you, etc, then you will need to purify yourself.

It would also be important for you not to allow the dog inside your house, or in areas you need to keep tahir, and so on.

There is no shar'i problem in touching, patting or feeding a dog. If your hands, or the dog is wet, then after patting you must wash your hand, because contamination of najasah occurs with contact and wetness.

But if it is dry, then you do not need to do anything.

Thank you for your question. The impurity that transfers from a dog needs to be purified from your clothes and place of prayer before you pray. The presence of a dog in itself is not a problem from a jurisprudential perspective. Perhaps you can confine it in an area in your house which you can purify afterwards if there are any places that you are sure impurities have transferred.

Will I get Najis if I save a drowning or injured dog or pig? And should I save them?

It is very good to save or help any animal including dog and pig. We have a Hadeeth about a sinner who was entitled to go to hellfire but was saved from hellfire just because he gave water to a thirsty dog. There is also a Hadeeth about a Muslim woman wo will go to hellfire just because of a cat which was locked up by her and left with out food and water. It is always very good to help, feed, give water to any animal.

Touching wet dog or wet pig will make your hand or body Najis, and that will never harm you as it can be purified with water.

We are meant to be the guardians of the earth, showing mercy, especially to innocent animals. We have a duty to care for them. Therefore, even if you became najis after rescuing the animal, this is of lesser importance than showing mercy and humanity towards a sentient being that is suffering. You can easily become tahir again by purifying yourself after touching the animal.

Why is a dog considered impure and not allowed to be kept inside a house?

Every rule in Islam is based on our interest and avoiding us any harm. We do not know all the details of the reason but Allah (SWT) and the Prophet (SAWA) know the full reasons. We trust Allah and His Messenger and believe that dog is Najis because it is harmful for us to be in contact with dog.

Many medical scientists confirmed that many dangerous parasites can come to humans from contact with dog.

I have heard that there is a Sahih Hadeeth that the Prophet (s) commanded us to kill black dogs. Is it true? If so, what is the reason and should the rule be applied generally or in a certain context?

This narration is in Sunni books including Saheeh Muslim (6:2448), Sunan al-Tirmithi (5:52), Sunan Abi Dawoud (8:34), Sunan al-Nasaa'ee 2:705, Ibn Maajah (2:1069) and many other Sunni books.

According to Islam, it is not ideal to have a pet dog, and it is better in terms of Islamic etiquette not to have a dog in the house, but it is not forbidden to have one.

However, if you have a dog in the house, you should be sure to observe Islamic rules of cleanliness for prayer. For instance, before praying salat, wash any area of yourself that the dog might have been licking or if the dog came into contact you while it was wet. When praying salat, avoid praying directly on the floor and instead pray on top of something (like a prayer rug or, if you do not have one, a towel or mat or something similar), and put it away when you are not using it so the dog cannot get to it. Also, be sure your clothes do not have dog hair on them and have not been licked by the dog or touched by a wet dog; if your dog is very affectionate, you may wish to have a separate pair of clothes that you only wear for salat (if this is possible). Also, if your family is very casual about dishes and where the dog goes, be sure the dishes you use have not been, ahem, slobbered on, licked, etc. (Some people are very strict about these things and some people are casual, that is why I am mentioning it)

Yes, this is inconvenient, which is one of the reasons it is better not to have a dog in the house! But you can still practice Islam and all aspects of Islam with or without a dog present.

Why does Islam permit a dog as a hunter or guard dog but not as a pet? And how does it work with that situation in terms of Taharah?

Dog is Najis whether it is used in hunting or guarding or otherwise.

Islam does not say that it is not allowed to have a dog as a pet, but it clearly says that dog is Najis and you must avoid any Najis item, otherwise your Prayers might be invalid if your cloth or body is Najis.

Hunting and guarding dogs are out of home usually, so there is no risk of Najasah on you from such dogs, but when the dog is at home as a pet , the risk is there.

Yes, but it is better if it can stay outside (such as in a dog house, if that is possible on your property; these days, they do have outdoor heaters for animals if that is a possibility).

I am sure you are familiar with the hadith saying that having a dog inside affects acceptance of prayers; Allah knows best. Of course, we are also supposed to be compassionate, and it is not compassionate to let it freeze to death!

People have had dogs as work animals for centuries, and even the Ashab al-Kahf had a dog around them. As someone once said, it is not the dog's fault that it is najis!
