Can I pray for someone’s death as they have been unjust, unfair, and emotionally abusive?

If you feel justified in invoking divine wrath against someone, prayer number 14 in al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyah ("His supplication when suffering acts of wrongdoing") may suffice, especially when recited regularly until the situation is resolved, and sometimes these du'as also help as a coping mechanism to gain wisdom from difficulty.

Ziyarat Ashura and Dua Alqamah do not hurt in this regard either.

Allah knows best whether death itself is the best manifestation of His justice, as sometimes justice is better served by keeping someone alive for some time. Frequently, Allah delivers justice in a manner which we could not have expected or asked for.

Of course, sometimes someone may wish to pray for someone to die to be free of their tyranny.

It is generally considered bad form to pray for the death of one's biological parents or children, perhaps due to the intimate link, but of course one could pray for other things such as relocation.

Death is guaranteed for all people anyway. 
Is it a sin to make Dua for hardship or a calamity to come down on a regular person, or to damn them with a La'na, for an injustice they have caused you?

Real Muslim prays for the good for every one. We should pray for those wronged us and did injustice on us to be guided to the truth and to leave wrong way to the right way.

'We don't curse any believer. We only curse the enemies of Allah (SWT), the Prophet (SAWA) and Ahlul Bayt (AS) who are in fact the enemies of mankind.

Looking at my life I really regret the way I treated my mother in law and put pressure on my husband against her. She has passed away and I now realise that my anger with her was unjust. I have lost a great opportunity to care for her. What can I do?

1. Recite Estighfaar for her e.g. Ya Allah, forgive her. Keep on seeking forgiveness for her as many times as you can.

2. Give Sadaqa and charity on her behalf.

3. Recite Quran and Du'a and Ziyarat on her behalf.

If a person is sinful does their patience count and have any merit when some injustice is done to them?

Patience in front of injustice is always very good. Every patient will get the reward of it depending on his intention and amount if his suffering. Allah says in Quran : Verily, the patient person get their reward with out counting. (Sura 39, Verse 10).
