For the birth of a child, the mother seems to have a much greater contribution compared to the father such as the months of pregnancy and breast feeding. Why is it then said that the child belongs to the father?

Child does not belong to the father only but belongs to both father and mother. Father is fully responsible for all livelihood expenses of the child and the mother, while mother is not responsible to spend on the child even if she is rich.

The Prophet Muhammad has ordered every one to look after his mother, his mother, his mother, then his father.

In the unfortunate situation of separation between father and mother, mother has the right of custody during the childhood years ( 2 years for boy and 7 years for girl) then custody will be for the father.

If a husband wants to take his son to meet his mother, who has mistreated his wife in the past, does he have that right over their son even if the wife does not approve?

The son must obey and go to see his grandmother. The mother has no right to prevent her son from visiting his grand mother. No obedience to any one including parents in disobeying Allah ( SWT).

I am the only Muslim in my family and my deceased mother was cremated according to her wishes. Her ashes will be buried, but is it permissible for some of her ashes to be used in making memorial jewellery, such as a ring, to be kept by the family?

​​​​​Cremating any human body is absolutely forbidden in Islam, and the will to be cremated is invalid , because human being is honoured in Quran ( We have honoured the children of Adam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and granted them from good things, and preferred them above many of our creatures a marked preferment.( Sura 17, Verse 70).

It is also not allowed to use the ashes in making memorial jewelleries or any thing else. It must be buried only.

An 11 year old boy is physically disabled and in pads, though he is mentally fine. How long can his mother continue to change him and bathe him?

His mother can continue nursing him as much as he needs nursing even when he becomes a Baaligh, because it is a medical requirement where there is no other option.
