During this time of caution due of the Covid-19 situation, does the use of alcohol based hand sanitizers invalidate fasting? If not, is it only allowed during these difficult days or is it a general ruling?

there is no problem in using alcohol based hand sanitizers and it does not invalidate the fast. This is a general ruling and it is not limited to any particular time-period.

I am sorry to hear you have to go through that. I am sure that is very upsetting.

Well, it is not as if God is going to punish you or send you to hell because your mother is cursing you while she is drunk. However, it isn't healthy to have that kind of negativity directed towards you, so if there is anything you can do to provide a more positive and spiritually/personally uplifting environment around yourself (for instance, listening to Qur'an on headphones), it might help deal with some of the negativity.

Also if possible it might be good to find people who have life experience and who can offer good advice (such as a relative or school/university counselor, if you are at an age where you are going to school/university) to discuss your future with, since it is easy to internalize negative ideas, particularly if our parents are telling them to us, and it might be healthy to be hearing a more positive voice about what you can do and how to aim for it.

Her behaviour when she is not sober has not effect on you nor you are responsible. Try to treat her well as a mother and pray for her guidance.

Alcohol . Najis

I understand that the type of alcohol used in hand gel and wipes is different from the alcohol that intoxicates, but are we allowed to use such alcohol gel and wipes and does that cause the hands to become Najis?

Leading scholars like Ayatullah Khoei and Ayatullah Sistani and many others say that this artificial alcohol which does not intoxicate is not Najis.

some Muslim scholars have considered alcohol to be najis resorting to some sort of qiyas, by saying that alcohol is the "spirit" of wine or other reasoning. However we do not find any direct evidence in the Qur'an and Sunnah to establish the najasah of non-beverage alcohol, and even alcohol in itself as some says, that is found in gel and wipes. Therefore it is permissible to use gel and wipes containing alcohol for hygienic purposes and hands won't get najis.

I have heard that the regular prayers are not accepted for forty days from one who has consumed intoxicants. Would their Du'a and Dhikr still be heard and rewarded?

as salam alaikum

there are ahadith stating that the prayer for the one who have consumed wine will not be accepted for forty days. There is no mention in those ahadith that his dhikr or du'a won't be accepted and actually it is said that such practices can accompany Muslims in all circumstances of life.

In the mentioned case, the person should also not forget to do istighfar and ask forgiveness for the sin that he committed. If he sincerely repents and has resolution of not committing the sin anymore, Allah is certainly All-Forgiving.

If someone works as a cashier or assistant in a store selling alcohol in the West, is it allowed to work there?

Selling alcohol is forbidden in Islam. There are cases, especially in non-Muslim countries, where a Muslim is compelled to work in a place selling haram items. In such case the person should commit him/herself to find a new job and he should ask Allah to change his situation towards a better way of life.

Are products like shampoos or lotions permissible to use when they contain elements such as cetyl alcohol, benzyl alcohol or linalool alcohol?

Yes it is allowed to use shampoos or lotions containing artificial alcohol.

Nothing is Najis unless and until you have concert evidence that it is Najis.

If you have doubt and want to be precautious, it is up to you to do Ehtiyaat (precaution) but we can not call any doubtful item as definitely Najis.

Wife . Husband . Alcohol

Can a wife throw away her husband's intoxicants that are there in their home, if he bought them with his own money?

It is obligatory on every Muslim to stop or prevent evil acts as much as he can with out causing harm which is more than that evil act e.g. danger on life or safety.

If we can destroy or throw away alcohol or intoxicants with out causing more harm, it will be obligatory on us to do so.

Obviously, throwing such evil items will not solve the problem totally if the husband is not willing to leave it, so, it is very good to try your best to convince him to leave evil acts, but if he did not listen, then you do your best to decrease his chances to utilize such evil items at least at home. By such act you will be helping him.

In such a situation, the wife is permitted to throw them away. With this said, it is best to speak to the husband and try to reach an understanding where he himself will stop buying and using such things. Throwing them away, while permitted, is going to be a temporary solution....

Muharram . Alcohol . Music . Majlis

Is it okay to have Muharram lectures in a banquet hall, where on other days alcohol is served and music is played?

It is allowed to use or rent or hire for religious activities including Namaz, Majaalis, lectures etc, a place which was or is used in un-Islamic way on other times. It is like the road where we walk on, which is used by good people and bad people. Every one is responsible of his acts.

No doubt, we need to be sure about Taharat in the place of prostration (Sojood) of Namaz.

Musical instruments and alcohol related items should be removed during the religious gathering to keep the respect of the religious activity.

Restaurant . Alcohol . Stock

If a restaurant doing alcohol business closes down, is it permissible to get commission on helping it sell its fixed assets that does not include any stock of alcohol?

If they close down with out any plans to restart alcohol business somewhere else, then helping them to sell stocks not linked with alcohol is allowed.

If they want to do the same unlawful business again, then it is not permissible to help them in any way.

In any case, helping in selling any material which can be used in alcohol is absolutely forbidden.
