If the person has any lawful income beside unlawful income, then you stay and eat at his place with the intention that you are utilizing his lawful income. If he has no lawful income at all, then you are not allowed to stay or eat from unlawful income.

Can instrumental music without lyrics be considered sinful, when it is used for studying, working, exercising, or relaxation purposes? And how can we really know whether such music that has no lyrics gets used in a sinful gathering?

Any music which is usually used in sinners gatherings is not permissible for us whether for studying, working, exercising, relaxation etc.

Listening to songs is not allowed in Islam. We have many authentic Prophetic Hadeeths that listening to songs creates hypocrisy in the heart like water growing a seed. No song is allowed unless it is just a Nasheed or certain recitation which can never be called a song by public.
