Aswad bin 'Amir narrated to us that Abu Israeel related to them from Hakam, who reported from Abu Sulaiman, who in turn reported Zayd bin Arqam saying:
‘Ali called upon people as witness by declaring: I beseech for God's sake a person who has heard the Prophet - peace and salutation of Allah be upon him - saying: "Of whosoever I am the master then Ali is his master. O' Allah! Befriend the one who befriends him, and hate the one who hates him", [to attest this fact]. Zayd bin Arqam says: ‘Thus sixteen people stood-up and bore witness.’
