قال في قرة العينين : عن البراء بن عازب وزيد بن ارقم : أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لما نزل بغدير خم أخذ بيد علي فقال : ألستم ‏تعلمون أني أولى بكل مؤمن من نفسه ؟ قالوا : بلى ، فقال : أللهم من كنت مولاه فعلي مولاه ، أللهم وال من والاه ، وعاد من عاداه . ‏فلقيه عمر بعد ذلك فقال له : هنيئا يابن أبي طالب أصبحت وأمسيت مولى كل مؤمن ومؤمنة ، أخرجه أحمد.‏
