The following question was kindly answered by Dr. Takim
Ummulbanin Merali
****************************************************************************
Question:
When a girl's family is considering proposals from believing men, what are
some criteria that they should be looking at? Also, what significance, if
any, is there in getting married to a syed assuming that all the proposals
are of the same calibre? Should the presence of a beard be considered as a
criteria?
Answer:
In considering proposals, the family should look at kuf' (compatability),
whether the boy performs the religius duties, observes the rules of shari'a,
has the etiquettes required of a Muslim and is a proper match for the girl
in terms of education, akhlaq and financial stability. Marrying a syed is
not necessarily better to marrying a non-sayyid. The question of the beard
is covered in observing the shari'a rules.
