Muslim should not promote any item linked with polytheism or any wrong worship under any excuse. Images of idols or wrong worship places should not be shared because it causes publicity of the wrong.

Is it allowed to post Islamic content, such as poetry and art, on social media without mentioning the original poet and artist or deliberately removing their names?

If the person who is posting such material claims falsely that the material is his material, it will a lie and a sinful act.

If he does not claim any wrong claim but he is just posting a material for the benefit of people, with out harming any one, then it is allowed to spread useful knowledge which helps people and does not cause harm to any one.

Angels . Art

Is it true that angels do not visit your house if you have a painting of an animate object? If so, should I throw away such paintings or should I just store them away from sight?

The narration which is in our books of Hadeeth from the Prophet (SAWA): Jabrael came to me and said: We, the angles, do not enter a house having in it a dog or a statue or a vessel in which people urinate. Al-Tahtheeb 2:377 and Al-Mahaasin 615.

Some Wahabi Shaikhs translate the Arabic word تمثال as painting or photo which in fact away from the meaning of statue.

It is Makrouh (Disliked) to make or keep paintings of full animate objects.

Yes it is allowed as far as the picture does not have anything against the rules of Islam. It should not be a picture of a female with out Hijab or any person or item or image which is not permissible in Islam.

Harming people is not allowed in Islam. If it does not harm them now or in the future and you are sure that they will never object on it, then it becomes permissible.

As a recent convert to Islam I have started wearing the Hijab. However, there are pictures of mine out there, without the Hijab, that were taken earlier. Is that counted as a sin?

You should try your best to get your previous pictures ( with out Hijab) and keep them away from public display. If you could not get all of them, you will not be responsible about them as you were not a Muslim when the photos were displayed. Now when you are a Muslim, it is not sin on you as it is out of your ability to remove it.

What you are able to do is for your comfort and peace of mind, if you have access to these images, ask them to be kindly removed, and hopefully they will comply.

Are there any Shia scholars who say that making pictures of Imam Ali (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS) is forbidden?

The drawings claimed to be similar to the image of Imam Ali (AS) and Imam Husain (AS) are linked with some cultures in places where Muslims live. Muslims in Eastern Europe, Turkey and Iran accept these drawings because of the common culture in those places accepts drawings of divine personalities, while Muslims is the Indian sub-continent, Indonesia, Malaysia and Far East do not have such culture. Many Shia scholars in these countries do not allow such drawings. Our leading Ulama in the Hawza say that these drawings are not more than the imagination of the persons who draw it. No one is allowed to claim that such drawings are the real image of the Infallible.

Is it allowed for artists to draw pictures of the tragedy of Karbala and the Masumeen?

Yes, it is permissible to sketch an image depicting certain events of Karbala, through the eyes of an artist. An example for this is the creative art of Mahmoud Farshchian. If done in a right way, it would be a wonderful method in conveying many positive messages, and hence it would be a recommended and encouraged act.

However, in regards to the Ma'sumeen, or members of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), one must be very careful in how they are drawn. To draw any of the members of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) in itself is not specifically haram, unless it is drawn in such a way that is insulting or lowering of their status.

We do not have any authentic narrations regarding exactly how they looked, so an artist will not be able to rely on anything that can be used as a basis.

It all comes down the the imagination of the artist, and how they visualise how someone would look at that time, which cannot in any way be verified. This is why some of our scholars, although do not prohibit it, they do say it is not free of problems and should be avoided.

Sadly, some images are drawn in an innapropriate way, being similar to images depicted in Churches, or images drawn of Jesus (a.s.), or drawing the Ma'soom like as if they have makeup, or thin eyebrows, or other common criticisms usually directed at these commercial pictures that we can see in the some places.

An artist is able to convey many artistic and spiritual messages beyond the facial depiction, and we must always remember that it is our duty to look beyond the physical material element of our relationship with how we can connect with them (a.s.).
