Sayyid (also spelt Saiyed, Seyit, Seyd, Said, Syed, Sayed, Sayyed, Saiyid, Seyed and Seyyed) (Arabic: سيد‎, Persian: [sejˈjed]; meaning "Mister"; plural: Saadat or Sadat Arabic: سادة‎ sādah is an honorific title denoting people (feminine version: sayyidah سيدة) accepted as descendants of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and his cousin Imam Ali through his grandsons, Imam Hasan ibn Ali and Imam Husayn ibn Ali, sons of Muhammad's daughter Fatimah and son-in-law Ali (Ali ibn Abi Talib). Female sayyids are given the titles Sayyida, Syeda, Alawiyah or Sharifa. In some regions of the Islamic world, such as in India, the descendants of Muhammad are given the title Amir or Mir, meaning commander, general.

Is it permissible in Islamic law to reject a marriage proposal if a girl seeks to avoid sin by marrying someone who is equal to her in all aspects but is not from the Syed lineage?

There is no "sin" in rejecting a marriage proposal, and there is no "sin" in marrying a non-Sayyid.

You must marry someone who, along with having the fundamental qualities of being religious and good akhlaq, but also compatible with you as well, and whether he is a Sayyid or not is irrelevant.

Is it necessary for a scholar with a Hashemi surname to prove the source of his lineage all the way back to someone from Banu Hashim to be able to wear a black turban?

Every one who claims to be a Sayyed with any surname needs to prove his family lineage to his Sayyed grand fathers or his family is well known as a Sayyed family in his home town.

If your father is from the family tree of Bani Hashim, then you are a Sayyed and you can wear black turban and pay your Fitra to Sayyed poor persons.

A Sayyid male/female is like every other Muslim, nad can marry a non-Sayyid/non-Sayyidah, Shi'ah or Sunni, with no difference. The one condition is she has assurance that she will not leave the Ahlul Bayt School of Thought, or negatively influenced or forced to become Sunni.

As for parents disapproval, there must be correct understanding between families, and one must always try to get the consent and blessings of parents.

As an Alavi and a descendant of the Ahlul Bayt, do I get double the sin for my bad deeds?

Every sinner gets one sin for sinning as we read in Quran: (Whoever brings a good deed shall get ten times like it, and whoever brings a bad deed shall have only like it)

(Sura 6, verse 160)

The wives of the Prophet (SAWA) were been warned that if one of them does bad, she will get double the punishment. (Sura 33, verse 30). That is because of the great responsibility on every wife of the Prophet (SAWA) to obey Allah and the Prophet and be a good example for others.

Descendants from Ahlul Bayt (AS) are not included in this rule. This is according to the verdicts of most of our Maraaje' of Taqleed.

Some people claim that Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (as) did not marry his daughters because there were no Sayyids available, using this as evidence that a Sayyida cannot marry a non-Sayyid. Is this true?

This claim is not true. Great Sadat scholars including Maraaje' of Taqleed, have allowed marriage of their daughters with non Sayyed Momins. The claim mentioned in your question came from certain culture with no concrete evidence in religion.

If your father is a Sayyed, you will be a Sayyed as well. Your mother alone with out your father will not make you a Sayyed.

Being a descendant of a person or a family depends on the definition of descendant. In general you are a descendant of all your grandfathers and grand mothers. But if you ask about being a Sayyed, then the definition of a Sayyed is the person who was born from a Sayyed father. So, your grandfather is related to the Prophet's family from his mother, but since his father was not a Sayyed, he is not a Sayyed. This is the verdict of most of our great scholars.

I am a non-Syed and have heard that only Syeds can wear green shawls. Is this true? If so, can I wear such a shawl indoors?

There is a common understanding among people of our Shia community that Black and Green turban and green shawl are worn by Sayyeds only.

Non Sayyed wearing a green shawl in public can make others think that he is a Sayyed which is not right. You can wear green shawl at home when there is no possibility of any one to think that you are a Sayyed.
