Yunus (also spelled Younas, Younes, Younis or Younus, Arabic: يونس‎, Younis, Persian: یونس‎, Younes, Turkish: Yunus) is a common male given name and the Arabic version, deriving through Greek Ιωνας (Ionas) from the Hebrew name יוֹנָה (Jonah), meaning dove, of the prophet Jonah.
In Turkish yunus means dolphin, from shortening of the obsolete yunusbalığı, literally “Jonah fish”.
