The Prophet Muhammed (SAWA) has the greatest gifts from Allah,v then his Progeny Ahlul Bayt (AS) who are part from him . There is no question of any act from any of gifted servants of Allah, away from Allah (SWT). Every act from them is by permission from Allah because they are constantly and continuously with Allah (SWT). The Hadeeth states: Verily, Allah Has made the hearts of the Imams, a place of His Will, so, whatever He wants, they will want. إنَّ اللهَ جعل قلوبَ الأئمة موضعا لمشيئته فإذا شاء شيئا شاءوه

Everything they want is exactly what Allah Wants.

Anything that occurs depends on the permission of Allah.

As for whether the Imams can exert control over the natural world, through the permission of Allah, within Shi'ism, there are varying views. Some scholars hold that they have the capability to affect the natural world in any way. Others say they have this ability in special cases where a supranatural act (karamat) is called for. Still others reject this idea as heterodox (ghuluww).

I personally hold the first view.

Why did Allah create so many other galaxies and planets if Earth and the world of the hereafter are all that is of relevance to mankind?

Allah (SWT) Has the All and Absolute Knowledge and Wisdom, while we have very little knowledge if we have any. He knows the wisdom of creating whatever He created from the nucleus and atom to the galaxies. No doubt , there is a great wisdom which is known to Him, but not to us as our knowledge is very limited. We are in this universe like a small kid who sees huge library with thousands of books and wonders why these books were written.

Is the suggestion that aliens may exist on other planets aligned with the teachings of Islam or in contradiction to them?

Allah (SWT) knows what He created and we do not know. We believe that the creation and the order is in the hands of Allah.(Al-A'raaf, 54).

We can not reject the possibility of creatures in other planets as we have no evidence suggesting impossibility of creatures in any part of the universe. No doubt our knowledge as ordinary human beings is limited but the question itself (Whether there are aliens on other planets or not) does not have direct effect on our religious duties and our day to day life. That is why we need not to focus on such issues more that believing that Allah creates whatsoever He wants and selects.(Al-Qassass; 68).

Are Angels, Jinn and mankind the only creation of God or could there be life on other planets? Have the Prophet (s) or Imams (a) spoken of other such forms of life?

This is a good question. As a wise scholar once said, it is likely that, in the Qur'an, Allah focuses on angels and jinn as the main sentient creatures other than humans since they are the ones we are most likely to have some sort of interaction with. However, this does not preclude the possibility (or, indeed, likelihood) of the creation of other beings.

It is narrated from Imam al-Baqir (A): ‘Perhaps you think that Allah has only created this single world, and you think that Allah has not created anyone other than yourselves! Nay by Allah, Allah has created a million worlds and a million Adams and you are in the latest of these worlds and of the latest Adams.' - Tawhid al-Saduq

There is a hadith from one of the Imams saying that Allah has a planet with a different length of day from Earth on which the inhabitants do not know that Allah is disobeyed anywhere. (I do not have the reference offhand, but perhaps someone can add it.)
