Sunnis claim that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) appointed Abu Bakr to lead prayers during his illness. Is this statement accurate, and can you provide more details on the entire incident?

This claim is fabricated. The Prophet (SAWA) never appointed Abu Bakr to lead prayers during his illness, but Ayisha sent her father Abu Bakr to do that with out permission from the Prophet, and when the Prophet came to know what Ayisha did, he went to the Mosque tolerating his illness, supported by Ali and Al-Fadheelat ibn Abbas, and pulled Abu Bakr back from the Mihrab and lead the prayers himself.

Ibn Abi Al-Hadeed, the well known Sunni Mu'tazili scholar stated that he asked his teacher: Do you say that the Prophet never sent Abu Bakr to lead the Prayer but it was A'yisha who sent her father? He replied me: It is not my claim but Ali Ibn Abi Talib said it, and he was present and I was not present.

What does Islam say about depression that leads to suicide? Does Islam acknowledge the existence of depression, and if someone commits suicide due to this mental illness, can they be forgiven by Allah?

There are different types of depression. Some of the depression cases can be avoided or treated by remembering Allah and sincerely seeking His Help. Some depression cases are out of control and can not be treated but by medical experts. Such uncontrolled depression is an illness like other uncontrolled illnesses. If the person loses control and goes out of his senses, then he will be considered behaving out of his senses. Allah only Knows the real feelings and status of the senses of people. Allah Judges people and we are not entitled to judge others. We just pray for the well-being of depressed people and for the forgiveness of late believers.

Is Narcissistic Personality Disorder classed as a mental illness in Islam? Would a Muslim man with such a disorder and an extreme God complex be judged and held accountable in the same way as a Muslim with no disorder?

The feeling of self admiring and superiority on others is bad and harmful. Narcissistic personality is away from the teachings of all the prophets and Infallible Imams who practiced and taught their followers to always be humble and down to earth. Yet, we don't call narcissism as a mental condition which exempts the person from any responsibility. He should think properly and be more realistic and more humble. Allah will judge every one according his abilities.

Is humane euthanasia of pets permitted if they are suffering a painful and fatal illness?

This would depend on the recommendation of a veterinarian or evaluation of a qualified person, as to whether the animal should be put down or not. If they believe that the animal pet should be put down, then it would be permitted to do so.
